DocSigma Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 At best my system is at the minimum system requirements. I know the obvious solution to increase performance would be to build a new system, but for the moment I was thinking about upgrading my current system in a way that would give it a significant improvement in game performance in DCS. With all settings settings set to max im able to run the sim at 1920x1200 at about 30fps with the occasional dips here and there during increased action. If I lower the res. to 1600x1200, and drop settings, such as: Scenes: medium Water: low Heat blur: off preload radius: down to 10000 Clutter: 0 MSAA: 4x Cockpit shadows:off My average fps expectantly increases to 45-50 - much more playable and smoother. I ran a few tests using hardwaremonitor to attempt to diagnose where the bottlenecks are in my system as it pertains to DCS. I performed two tests. Test1 is with the lower/playable settings and Test2 is with everything maxed. I set the app to monitor load on the CPU, Mem, and GPU. Would you say my primary problem in terms of DCS performance is just the raw power of my GPU? I know my 6gb of mem is minimum and was thinking about upping my system mem to 8gb, but in both tests memory load didn't seem to go beyond 80%. My CPU is running over 4ghz and the load during play for 30mins didn't get above 20% ( I know DCS is more dependent on raw MHZ and not so much on Core utilization). Would I be correct in saying that my primary deterrent to improved performance in DCS is my GPU and secondarily my system memory? My plan was to upgrade my card to maybe a R9 280x or a GTX700 series and my mem to 8gb. Do you think - looking at these two graphs - that this upgrade would yield noticeable gains in framerate or not worth it. Thanks for taking the time and any suggestions. It's very appreciated. Mustang Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Is that 5850 a 1gb card? i'd say that's the main bottleneck.
Corrigan Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I really don't think your RAM is an issue. Your tests seem to confirm this. I'd spend all my money on CPU or GPU. Win10 x64 | SSDs | i5 2500K @ 4.4 GHz | 16 GB RAM | GTX 970 | TM Warthog HOTAS | Saitek pedals | TIR5
DocSigma Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 Thanks for the feedback. It's really appreciated. Looks like a vastly improved GPU is order - at least until I piece together a new system build. AtaliaA1 Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 The R9 280X has had issues for users in this sim. Do a search some are waiting and hoping EDGE brings their card around to better FPS. I would go with the 7xx series. This was a Boutique Builder iBuypower rig.
