I'm trying to pass the very first mission in Su-25T_Flaming_Cliffs campaign on 1.12a version.

As some remember you are armed with unguided rockets only that you fire from 2km range.

You are supposed to destroy two shilkas and one artilery unit defended by 5 soldiers equiped with Igla launchers.

If you don't destroy those two shilkas and artilery unit before your convoy arrives you loose the mission.

Now here's the problem.

I'm having real trouble evading Igla's.

They are already firing at me when I'm 4.5km away from them in straight line (checked with labels) and about 1,5km above them. I visually detect missile launch easily and I turn and begin to climb rapidly keeping the missile in the view at my 3 o'clock low, dropping flares rapidly and IR Jammer is on. 9/10 times Igla hits me directly in the engines.

Is Igla the ultimate weapon or I am doing something wrong?

I wasted already few hours trying to pass that mission. It seems my wingman has the same issue. He gets knocked out 9/10 times. I use him as decoy. So all four Igla guys fire at him, and when the do their quick reload (you can reload igla???) I take out the first Shilka.

Sometimes I managed to take out the second Shilka, though I get knocked out sooner or later by another Igla launch.

Don't know if they're overmodelled or not, but you can certainly beat them.

My technique is rolling in high and fast at idle, lining up before I'm in max range, fire once launch is authorised, and popping flares during 70% throttle steep climbing turns away from the missile.

If you're travelling in a straight line, the missile WILL hit you. Even a slight turn helps in confusing it.

Maneuvre as well as using countermeasures . . . . . the trick is to be as far away from the centre of the threat zone as you can. No exceptions.

Thank you for your replies. I don't know if you tried first mission of FC campaign, though. Because there you are very limited. First, there's a deep valey you need to enter which significantly reduces space for manuever.

Second, you are limited to S-24 rockets only. You have 6 of them, and 3 main targets so you have to aim very accurately to avoid wasting a rocket.

Third, you get launch authorization at 2km away from the target, while soldiers which are very close to the target already launched their Iglas at you.

It is more tricky then you guys think. I hope you try the 1st mission of FC campaign on 1.12a yourself. Maybe you come up with some ideas.

Tommorow I'll try not to use IR jammer at all. Sound stupid? Well, maybe it actually helps Igla track me. Because they don't want to track flares at all.

I wasted already two evenings on this mission. It's a matter of honor to complete it.

I think Igla is seriously overmodeled. I don't think shoulder launch weapons have effectiveness at around 0.9

Also I think that IR jammer doesn't do nothing in this game. I haven't noticed even a single situation where IR jammer made a heat seeking missile's warhead to explode before it actually got close enough to engine heatsignature.

The IR jammer only covers your rear anyway. Reduce throttle and have the flares out -before- they launch ... real life tactic, and it does work in LO.

Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D

I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

It's been a long time since I flew this one. When I flew it, IIRC, I had my wingman trail me in on the first pass. I overflew the target (like I often do) at 2500?? meters to see what would come up at me while ordering him in to attack. He was far enough behind me to be unopposed on the first pass. After that, however, he was next to useless and ended up going down in flames.

In attacking on my own, I attacked while dropping flares. As the SAMs started up I would sort of barrel roll past them, steady up, aim and shoot. Escape was up the side valley. I think there's one more target farther up the main valley that proved more difficult. I got him but not without taking some damage myself.

If I have some time, I'll try to refly it and see what happens.

I just completed that mission again, it's hard to hit those shikas with cosistency without getting nailed.

It helps to attack from a direction that maximize the distance to the iglas. Also you don't want to expose your engines after the run if there's missiles inbound, better to pop flares, dodge the missiles and then break of.

Ironhand, please record a track! :)

I have my missile effectiviness slider set at medium (I've never touched it).

I noticed that those Igla guys reload (lol, can you reload that in RL?) very quickly as I said. But after some time it seems they are out of ammo or something. I tried this mission with invulnerability on.

I'm still 2KM above those Iglas, and 4.5KM away from them in straight line, and they are already firing at me. I have to wait another few moments until I get launch authorization. So doing the strike in almost "kamikaze" way, is not recommended. I'll get nailed 99% of the time.

I think Igla could be an uber A2A weapon
