Hi all,

Even with my oldish rig, other than the new MSI GTX970 Gaming OC, this card flies.

I haven't had any chance to beat it up but from what I have seen in DCS and Elite: Dangerous I'd be surprised if anyone is disappointed with it.

In Elite: Dangerous the FPS at maxed out settings went from 30ish to a flat 100 with no stuttering. DCS I need to really have a go with and run some harder testing.

Granted I moved up from another MSI card, the GTX670 OC, I should see a major change but on 2 screens with everything maxed I havent seen a stutter yet.

In DCS I guess that's down to the extra memory, my old card only had 2GB whilst this has 4GB, as I think DCS is very graphics memory hungry.

I cant wait to see what EDGE is like and given I got it for just under £250 a 2nd one for SLI could be on the cards if anyone shows its worth.

As an upside the 670 screamed under load though I never saw it overheat and sucked power like mad, this one is still silent even maxed and is supposed to be more energy efficient so I guess thats all good too.

Worth a go I think.

J.

I'm still torn, I've all but convinced myself I want the Gigabyte version, I'm just trying to decide if the 980 is worth the extra money as the difference in price is pretty large. Maybe a 970 with a view to add a second down the line would be a good idea given that EDGE supports multiple GPUs...

I have the 680 also, it has performed admirably so far.

Kinda the same thought I had but I went with the highest clocked one, so far, that EVGA released with the new fixed cooler. If I decide to upgrade in 90 days then I can pay the difference and get a 980, shipping excluded.

I have got yesterday the msi gtx 970 gaming, it's rock, dcs go faster and faster, with nvidia surround i've 70 fps steady, with oculus rift all Maxed out and with rift as primary, I have 75fps with normal mission, no stettero no d'oro effect, only down side is when there are cloud The fps go down to 69-70 fps......

It's a flying card

I get a steady 90fps with my GTX680, only the occasional sutters during heavy weapon releases and around built up bases etc. I do wonder if a 9 series will improve my performance much, the extra ram might help over my 2gb card I guess.

I'd be interested to hear the results from anybody that moves from a 680 to either the 970 or 980..

How's Elite Dangerous? Is it worth the $75 for beta access?

Anyone check out their 970 with a hardware monitor while running DCS?

I noticed the clocks on mine are dropping to under 1000 while DCS is running and not sure if it should be, (first NVidia card I've ever owned I believe).

Power level is about ~50% and temps are in the 40's. Is it just because the CPU is limiting it and the card only needs to go so fast?

I'm not having any issues with FPS btw, this thing is a rocket IMO. Just want to make sure it's working correctly.

In 3DMark for instance, the clock bounces around 1382 - 1454 and 110% power for the entire test.

Thanks!

Yes that is just simply your gpu not being used due to well it's at its fpS you want it to reach. Also could be a very bad cpu bottleneck, if so maybe overclock and all will be better. But since your getting themfps you want shouldn't worry about it, if anything try maxing out the graphics settings in game and with mods like ssweetfx, the ultra, draw, distance mod and mustangs new shaders mod. That should work your gpu more. Or play the game in 3d like flight sims where meant to then you should have constant 95-99 percent utilization lol

So it's hitting the highest FPS that the CPU can provide, that makes sense since that 1 core is always over 90%.

Yea I noticed it was taxed a little more after I turned everything to high. But still not even hardly heating up the GPU. Which is nice.

I think my 4.5 OC on the CPU is about all I'm gonna get out of it.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything Nvidia related to DCS World.

Well more than likely its hitting your max fps of 60 if you have vsynch on and a 60hz display? Otherwise yes it will eventually be limited by the cpu. As the game is now you can run max fps until the cpu bottleneck of the big cities come to play lol

Motherboard is PCIE-3 so it's not an issue. It's just not ramping up as it doesn't have enough to do it seems.

All I saw was that it was out of stock, but I will assume the price was good. I have issues with MSI that prevent me from considering them though, even if that was a USA deal.

I have the ASUS Strix 980 on (back)order for about the average going price but I am happy. :)

That 370 converted to USD is actually slightly more than I am paying for my ASUS 980.

That doesn't surprise me tbh, we always get screwed over on price conversions. The Asus Rog Swift for example is about £650 here.. barf! Could order from the USA but then I'd get hit with import fees etc, just doesn't work out.

Don't feel too bad, you don't want to know what TFC charged me to ship some hats from the UK. :P

As a point of reference, at 4K, switching from an R9 290 to a GTX 970 makes almost no difference whatsoever in FPS. :)

But I did it so that I can use a 60Hz 4K TV finally, not for any actual performance improvement.

Hey Cichli - I've got the same 780 as you have right now...I'm also looking at the 980 from Asus...question, why not wait for edge to see the performance benchmarks? I'm debating whether to hold off and maybe swing for a Titan black IF my 780 can't make it....it's all up in the air....I really don't know what I would do with my current 780...I've only had in since last July :(

Thoughts guys? On holding off till Edge...?

"it don't matter, no more..."
