stray cat Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Some questions about speed. 1. After the new patch, in the same map I was flying at 8km height, and on my first flight I managed to get up to 2200km/h of speed in level flight. However on the second flight, the plane barely managed to creep above 1200km/h. The configuration on both cases was no weapons, started with a full fuel tank and 800l drop tank. At the point where I started to attempt to get top speed, the fuel tank was already dropped and I had 2000l of fuel left. Flaps in, airbrakes in, gear in. What can cause these very different situations? Also on the second, slow attempt, it appeared the plane had much more drag. While flying at above 900 km/h, when flying level the plane kept dropping above 10m per second. The only wayto keep the plane from losing altitude was to pull up and keep flying with a 10 degree AOA. Is that supposed to be like that or a bug? Also obviously the afterburner was enabled and on in both cases on default settings ( I did not flip any switch related to afterburners.

Did you restart the mission between these attempts, or did you land - refuel, rearm and then try again? Nicholas Dackard Founder & Lead Artist Heatblur Simulations https://www.facebook.com/heatblur/
stray cat Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 Was a clean restart, back to mission editor, then start.

HellToupee Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Try reducing aoa until you pickup speed then keep all.
Philipp2 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 It's easier when you climb throughout Mach 1 at a about 6000m.then start continuos climb. You should get Mach 2 at about 10000m. Some more hints - check nose cone switch - check weather ,maybe too much drag in 8000m to get faster than m1.6 ( don't know if DCS is simulating that ?!)
Random Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 My 1st guess would be nosecone switch. I'm always forgetting it!
Fishbreath Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 (edited) I lean toward there being a drag issue—rearm/refuel applying the drag for the old stores and the new ones. I took off with two R-13s, then did an acceleration test at 750-800 meters, then did a full circle at 4g, then jettisoned the R-13s and landed. I landed and rearmed/refueled, made sure to hit the nose cone switch, then took off again and did the same test. Climb out was a little less energetic, and although acceleration didn't feel too different (I'll time it once the video is done), the turn felt wallowy. Not super-wallowy, but certainly more like I was carrying four missiles than two. The obvious test would be to take off and repeat the test with four missiles, but I don't have time for that tonight. Video with annotations coming later. I forgot to save the track file. Corrigan Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I like that idea, both of the possible cause and, as you say, the obvious test. Would be interesting to take-off, do a lap, land, rearm, repeat. When you've done it 5 times we should know if the drag is erroneously added to that of the previous config. Sadly, I don't have time either. Win10 x64 | SSDs | i5 2500K @ 4.4 GHz | 16 GB RAM | GTX 970 | TM Warthog HOTAS | Saitek pedals | TIR5
Fishbreath Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 My landing was so bad I 1) cut it out of the video and 2) would tend to think I might not make it five laps. :P Black Shark, Harrier, and Hornet pilot Many Words - Serial Fiction | Ka-50 Employment Guide | Ka-50 Avionics Cheat Sheet | Multiplayer Shooting Range Mission
Fishbreath Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 (edited) The first run of tests starts at about 2:50, and the second run starts at about 8:40. The actual results are a lot more inconclusive than it felt—I could tell it felt heavier the second time around. The initial AoA in the turn is the best indicator for me: starting a 4g turn was ~6 AoA the first run, and a 3.7g turn took 7 or 8 the second time.
