I'm hoping someone knows of either a Good (i.e. Detailed Descriptive) Video I can watch OR a Track file or whatever, that will clearly show me what I need to do to Orbit Around a target while keeping my nose on it .... For Rocket Attacks etc.

Just the ability to properly Side-Slip at velocity (while still under control !!!) will be a great skill to learn. But doing it while going "around" a fixed point will definitely be an asset that I can't be without.

I realize that it will take Tons of Practice to learn and perfect.

The problem is "not knowing the correct procedures i.e. inputs, timing, speed" etc.

I have seen it done in at least one video, but there was no narrative and certainly no instructions. But I can't even find that video any more.

ANY assistance with this part of my learning curve will be greatly appreciated.

Therefore, THANKS in Advance

I'd do it, but I don't know if I could explain it much better in a video than I could here... I believe the maneuver is called the funnel (at least that's what it is for RC helicopters, pretty sure I read it in the shark's manual too).

It's easier to get a feel for it when you are starting from a hover. Start a slide slip, but give some pedal to keep the nose on target, play around with fore/aft cyclic to keep your distance constant, and once you reach a certain point in sideways velocity (depending on load, wind, etc), you run out of pedal travel and you can't increase the speed any more.

It's really something you have to try until you get a feel for it, and it takes a bit of practice.

I think is a cool maneuver... a la BF2-4... but not much of a use. If is something that can kill you it will while doing it so is better to engage from safe distance if is not dangerous why wasting time and fuel? :)

However.... if you need it badly... you can master first the lateral moving, which is not so difficult to understand... you move stick laterally and prevent natural turn of the heli by keeping it on one heading with pedals. Then you add movement by tilting it forward a bit and preventing altitude loss. What you aim is for a spiral at first... then... by practice you get to do circles.

AFAIK it was a feature that supposedly only Ka-50 could do it but then I saw that most of the apt helicopters can. Heck... most of the apt helicopters can do things better than Ka-50... loopings, rolls, etc.:pilotfly:

I think in the Apache thread in Chit-Chat there is a video of an Apache performing the Funnel ... where the circle that the nose describes has a diameter of 2-5 meters ... at 2 meters above the ground. :o)

Excellent. Thanks for the replies.

I will try what I have read here.

I am surprised to learn that this maneuver "might" be in the Manual !!

I guess I will have to take a deeper look (I don't recall seeing anything like that .. but then I didn't get too far into the End of the Manual .. because I was still trying to just keep the choppa' in the air for more than 10 seconds .. never mind the fancy stuff.

Thanks again everyone.

No, but it's certainly a fun way to employ rockets and the gun against a column of soft targets.

You are probably right Ricktoberfest. But then I was thinking more of the soft targets like KLR Rico was speaking about. Or bunkers or infantry.

Just the ability to maneuver like that, all the while being able to hit something with rockets (which I can hardly do flying straight at any target short of a large barn right now !!). I am getting a wee bit better now though.

I created my own mission for just flying around and firing Smoke Rockets at things like parked trains and buildings etc.

Thanks Zaelu for posting that image (Chapter 5 eh ??!!!). I am surprised I could have missed that. In fact, it appears that I have completely overlooked the chapter on aerodynamics ... thinking I knew enough about that. At the very least, I wasn't expecting to find anything about this style of flying in the manual ... at least not until near the END in Fight Tactics or Survival or something like that.

The fact is, I did read the entire manual a couple years ago (like any of that was retained ... NOT).

Now I just look at the Table of Contents and go right to the Section that interests me the most at any given time (ie. when I have questions !!).

Thanks again everyone. I guess I need to pay a wee bit more attention .... and become a little more aware of what Each Chapter has to offer.
