I've put together a sound layout that I had to share. It really immerses me in Blackshark. I purchased a Razor Blackshark Headset. If you haven't seen these headphones you should check it out. It's a metal construction helo can replica... very well built and looks cool. It has a great mic and sound. This is the first headset I've used where I actually had to turn the bass down.

Next, I added a splitter and ran the other output to a 1000 watt tuner. I have a big bass speaker that sits between the wall and my pedals.

The result is that I have my cans on my head, but I can hear sound outside of them as well. I have the bass turned up on the external sound so the woofer gives my pedals some serious shake. It simulates sounds being outside your headset.. like IRL. It occurs to me that if ED could split the aircraft radio out to the 'default communications channel' in windows, and all other sounds to the 'default device channel', the sound split would add even more realism... but that's ok.. this is cool enough. Thought I'd share.

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

TRUE Immersion

I did that once with another program- but you really don't hear much outside the headphones unless you really turn it up- loud enough to not hear my wife and kids telling me it's hurting their ears! It might not be realistic, but I enjoy the sounds of the engines, missiles firing, wind buffeting etc. so it's just easier to do in headphones with no external speaker.

OK.. this may not be for everyone. It could require some patience in.. altering volumes.. I guess. Effect may be dependent on your equipment too. I promise I'm not imagining things though hehe. I can FEEL the wind and engines.. even when it's not too loud. I can definitely hear the external source as well.. it emulates the effect of 'headset audible confinement' with ambient external noise outside of the cans. Oh well... sorry it didn't work out for you.

Can you hear your doorbell? :D

If you dont, then be prepared to also ''FEEL'' the :police: dragging out of your cockpit and transporting you to the nearest police station..

( the sound of the police breaking your door will easily blend with the battle sounds, so no chance of hearing it either :D )

I am using a 5.1 surround sound set-up which I use to play the in-game sounds. At the same time I am wearing a Sennheiser PC 363D headset for stuff like Teamspeak.

The PC 363D has the huge advantage that it is an open design, where the cans have holes in them. This has two advantages which are quit nice:

-There is air circulating through them, which prevents the ears from getting quit hot and sweaty.

-External sounds (produced by the surround set-up) can be heard just perfectly without much muffling. Together with a decent subwoofer this creates quit good immersion.

The only disadvantage with that headset is the fact that you can hear external sounds, which you don't really intend to hear, quit well. So it won't really work when you have a lot of background noise, unless you turn up the surround system quit high. Counter noise with more noise!:music_whistling:

Strongharm,

I'm not exactly an audiophile -- but appreciate quality gear. I'm confused though, as to what's unique about the headset -- how is it difference than any other over-the-ear headset (e.g., i have a pair of Corsair HS1's)?

They certainly chose a great model name for the headset!

I use a similar setup, but as well as a bass I use x2 tactile transducers which create extra shake. :)

On the left you have David Clarks, which are common in military aviation. On the right is the Razor Blackshark headset.
