mr.john_doe Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Hello, I have red and executed this tutorial: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=329617142 I think it is a good tutorial for beginning as you can see results very quick. But I had one problem. The mission gives you the targets on waypoint 1 so you know that they are there. So you turn your aircraft to this. Move the radar zwo times up and there are two nice tankers. But I have two problems here: 1. Without that knowledge of waypoint 1 I hadn't a glue where and how I should scan for targets 2. As the enemies in this missions are marked with red signs I know that there where several helicopters and SU25 in the air. But I didn't see them on the radar when heading directly to them. So my question is is there a guide or tipps in finding targets? My goal is to take on a random mission (without SAM and AAA) and survive. But till this there seems a lot to learn ...
AegisFX Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Keep the radar on and just scan. Keep the distance scale around 80 or 40. You will never get contacts beyond 80 miles. That guide was a pretty decent one, but it didn't say that the numbers on the left of the radar screen is the altitude range. For example, you are at 20k ft. Your radar is set to scan at 40 miles wwithin 40k and 0. The scan zone is a lot smaller than that at 10 miles, and if you could see the radar beam it is closer to a cone with the tip coming from the nose. In general, scan in one spot for 4 seconds then move the altitude range around to cover everything. mr.john_doe Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Thanks. I did knew the range number. How can I be sure what kind of target I lock? On the radar I only see a square but how do I know this is a mig or a awacs? So is there some kind of pattern when I don't know that there are enemies in the air? To get sure that they didn't came over my flank?

To get sure that they didn't came over my flank? You can extrapolate a number of things from the combination of radar and RWR info. The maximum range that pretty much all fighter sized targets show up in sim is 62nm. Strikers can be about 73nm, and awacs and tankers(?) can be seen further than 80nm. The lines on the VSD (radar) line up with the dot on the RWR between 10-2oclock. If a contact has its radar on at a given range and bearing that lines up, certain assumption can be made until your in range for NCTR to take affect (24.9nm). http://104thphoenix.com/
Dutchy93 Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 For anyone interrested in the F15C's radar, look to this guys video's. Its made for FC2, true but most of the mechanics still work for DCS. It gives you a basic understanding of how the radar works. This is a 3 video series. It'll take about 45 mins of your time, but believe me when I say its worth it. Good luck:

There are others as well on my Flankertraining website. Just click my sig to get there.
