LNR212 Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Hey Guys! I'm using currently a XFX 7970 Blackedition which operates 4 Monitors (1xHDMI, 1xDVI, 2xmini Displayport). Is there any similar or newer/better nVidia-card which can handle 4 Monitors? because i would like to use a nVidia card for DCS and use my old 7970 for my second pc... And second question regarding SoftTh: I am succesfully using SoftTh. On the Homepage from SoftTh i read: ..."You need three monitors attached to PCI Express video cards. Only one card does all the rendering work, so secondary card can be a low end card, only Direct3D support is required." Does this mean i can use a "new" nVidia Graphiccard and can connect my old GTX 295 and connect Monitors as well on it? Thanks and sorry for stupid questions :music_whistling:
BitMaster Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Nvidia GTX 970 should be what you are looking for, the 980 GTX is even faster, like 8-10% but costs almost twice as much. Tom's Hardware Page has a nice round up of all recent high end cards, check it out. The MSI 970 GTX G1 is the best if you want to O/C as well, the G4 version is more modestly power targeted. Either one is fine, sometimes the G1 is even cheaper then the slower G4 ( the difference is how far you can O/C each one, the G1 goes higher but at a higher power rating & heat ) I have no idea about your other questions but I would not mix AMD and Nvidia in one system, that can't be good ! Stay with 1 brand. Lie when you get a new Nvidia 970 GTX you could hook up the 295 as well, as stated by that website. Try it out and make backups before, just in case ! LNR212 Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Thank you BitMaster! That was a very insightful and fast reply, thank you! The 970 4G unfortunately is nowhere in stock, but the price would be ok. just to be sure, i can use all 4 connectors to use 4 monitors at the same time (for DCS) and of course i would only use 2 cards from the same manufacturer... but i dont understand how to install 2 drivers, or do i just have to install one for the newer card? or is it irrelevant if they are just from the same manufaturer?
cichlidfan Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 There are five connectors on the 970 and any four can be used simultaneously. As for stock, you just have to find someone accepting pre-orders and hope for the best. I am waiting for a 970 to ship, right now. :) ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! LNR212 Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Ok, thanks! Found it on amazon for 355,- pre-order. But it has "only" four connectors?! From description: 1x Dual-link DVI-I, 1x Dual-link DVI-D, 1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort On my 7970 I can not use DVI-I + DVI-D together... Could someone please confirm that I can use ALL 4 simultaneously...?!? If yes, I will pre-order.
cichlidfan Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 (edited) Which card are you looking at? I know the ASUS and an EVGA only have four ports but Zotac and Gigabyte have five (one Gigabyte version even has six). I am not sure what works on the four port cards. LNR212 Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Aha... now im confused.... OK, I found out that gigabyte has more connectors. But whats the difference between Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce 3X, 4GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, 3x DisplayPort (GV-N970WF3OC-4GD) ab €337,63 and Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Gaming G1, 4GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, 3x DisplayPort (GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD) ab €356,78 or Zotac GeForce GTX 970 AMP! Extreme Edition, 4GB GDDR5, DVI, HDMI, 3x DisplayPort (ZT-90103-10P) ab €398,98 Please help, I just want a reasonable nvidia card for my 4 monitors...
cichlidfan Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I am not sure about the Gigabyte cards although WindForce refers to the cooler and the Gaming edition, AFAIK, also has a WindForce cooler. The reviews on the Zotac (and my experience with the 980 model) indicate that the Extreme edition runs very quiet and cool compared to some of the other brands. The Zotac is what I am currently waiting for, also from Amazon. SkateZilla Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Most of the Current Gen cards utilize the same basic I/O: -1 HDMI -1 DISPLAY PORT 1.2 -2 DVI-D However, I prefer to have all my Displays running off the same display clock timing. Since DisplayPORT broadcasts it's own Display Clock Timing separate of the VPU Timing Pipeline for HDMI/DVI, there's gonna be sync/tearing issues in extreme/rare cases. I've stuck with my MSI R7970 Lighting, Simply because all 4 of my gaming displays are connected to MiniDP1.2. When I had them Mixed between DP and HDMI/DVI, I had the tearing issues depending on which display was set as primary. 1 Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
LNR212 Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Hi SkateZilla! Thanks for input! I also use both miniDP and DVI/Hdmi on my current 7970. Tearing is no problem for me, i use SoftTh and have set the outer monitors to a max of 30 fps, so no tearing at all even on mainmonitor... I hope DCS 2.0 will be compatible with softth, very usefull tool. could someone please confirm that (when i have my new 970) i can use my old 295 to connect a 5th monitor with the same driver installed as for the 970? just curious...

As for monitors, running a 295 simply for an output is a crazy waste of energy. LNR212 Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 SoftTH is coming in vers 3.0 (http://www.softth.net) developer is comunicating on his Facebook fanpage. Release should be soon, so hope dies last regarding DCS 2.0 and SoftTH. Yeah, sounds like a waste of energy. But I dont use it anymore and if it would be possible to connect a 5th monitor... why not ;)
SkateZilla Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 DisplayPORT 1.2 MST Hub will turn one DP into 3. So: DP-> MST 3 Port Hub for 3. HDMI -> DVI -> There's also a 4 port MST Hub for 1080/30Hz Screens.
