Flight Path Marker, Velocity Vector, Total Velocity Vector. Very, VERY useful item for the HUD.

The manual says that in the HUD there is an "aircraft datum" that merely shows aircraft orientation relative to the ground.

Am I missing something?

You're not missing anything. :D

Perhaps I'm not reading this correctly, but I would disagree quite strongly with the notion that the FPM/TVV is not useful. While it's true that a good pilot can fly their aircraft competently without one, a great pilot knows how to make the FPM one of the most important tools in their flying kit.

OP: to the best of my knowledge, Russian aircraft did not have the equivalent of a FPM/TVV. It's one of the big advantages western pilots enjoyed IRT situational awareness and flight data.

Any pilot can fly their aircraft competently without one. A great pilot doesn't need it at all, and it's not like you're looking at it in the middle of a fight.

Is it useful? Sure is.

First thing I missed too Mower, too many hours in BMS I guess.

GG, among other things I use it to put me in lead/lag pursuit so I wouldn't say it is useless in a fight.

VVI is an advantageous tool not only presenting useful data not otherwise available but it also aggregates and supports other indications and indication modes e.g. AoA and landing glide path range. Secundo, VVI provides information in a manner directly readable by human, I.e. bypassing the need for conversion of numerical data into geometric data.

Now put those remarks on how great pilots don't need it etc. somewhere they belong :)

It's only "it requires more time to learn to do the same without VVI."

I can get by without it, but it is not a question of "different philosophies" IMHO, because if you COULD have one in your tactical jet, why would you not? Perhaps a technological barrier?

There's no technological barrier, it is a different philosophy. Their more modern planes have it, but there's really nothing in the older avionics that would make them incapable of supporting it.

OK thanks for the info.

No worries, been flying the Crane since Flanker 1.0, funny I never noticed then the missing FPM. :pilotfly:
