gavagai Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I miss the old maps on Merlin's server with air-starts, the river as an obvious landmark for combat, and easy to find ground vehicles if no one else was online yet. We all made a lot of progress in the P-51 back then. Every sortie offered some opportunity for combat, and if you had an hour to spare it would be time well spent. Sometimes I feel like I'm chasing those experience with the current offerings in DCS. But the maps are big, the flak is everywhere, and the amount of air-to-air combat time I can gain in a month pales in comparison to what I could find on the old maps. I have a good deal of flight time in the 190D-9, but I'm still nowhere near as comfortable in it as I am in the P-51 because most of my 190D-9 stick is spent scanning my monitor searching for dots. Moreover, I am too afraid of taking risks and getting shot down because I don't want to spend the time starting up and climbing out again (to search for more dots). When I was a kid I would receive clothes that I wouldn't grow into for another year. DCS multiplayer is like that for WW2. Give it another year when we have more pilots and these sophisticated maps might be interesting, but right now I just want more opportunities to mix it up and actually learn how to fly and fight in these beautiful aircraft. Is anyone else with me? If Merlin wouldn't mind sharing his old maps I can run them, at least part-time. Or I can also use the mission editor to make something comparable. I love the complexity of engine starts and systems management in DCS, but as my pilot friend likes to point out, it's not something I feel the need to prove again and again just to have some fun dogfighting. P-51D | Fw 190D-9 | Bf 109K-4 | Spitfire Mk IX | P-47D | WW2 assets pack | F-86 | Mig-15 | Mig-21 | Mirage 2000C | A-10C II | F-5E | F-16 | F/A-18 | Ka-50 | Combined Arms | FC3 | Nevada | Normandy | Straight of Hormuz | Syria

Merlin-27 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I miss the old maps Man, you're gonna make me cry. Haha It almost seems like you knew what we were up to last evening! There is a new updated version of River Raiders - Killer Bees Edition in the testing phase and is almost ready to go, which includes the 109. I did remove the air starts but if you guys really want them we might be able to adjust it some. Be aware: It's a very primitive mission with no cool scripts or any of that stuff and you WILL encounter AI (sometimes a challenging hoard of them) but it is meant to offer some fun no matter how many people are flying. I now have the second DoW server running and I may keep one as a quick action oriented option and the other as a more involved campaign style experience. (dOoOm has a few new missions that are incredibly awesome and immersive in the works) Gav, you know this has been an adventure from the very beginning. It's not always clear what works best and what people enjoy most but hang in there, we are trying to make the DoW servers something most people can enjoy no matter their flying preferences. Also guys, please be patient with us. The DoW public server effort is fueled by the love of the game and made possible by a few people who offer up their free time in an attempt to make the community better. We are faced with new challenges each day as stuff is changing and as the WWII part of DCS continues to evolve. (while also dealing with life, careers and family responsibilities) :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] [Dogs of War] WWII COMBAT SERVER | P-51D - FW190-D9 - Me109-K4 Visit Our Website & Forum to Get More Info & Team Speak Access
Ultra Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I like the idea of a more "instant action" oriented server. Or even just some options for air starts in the regular maps. It makes multiplayer more approachable when you don't feel you need 3+ hours to have a good MP session. You DoW guys are doing a great job. I've liked every map i've seen so far. Keep up the good work!
CorsairHundo Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I was in the DoW server last night and saw the "test" server and wondered what was going on. I left and came back online and the "regular " DoW was gone. It doesn't take long to start and takeoff, is it the flight to the mission that is time consuming? I'm new so I don't know? Don
Merlin-27 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Thanks Ultra. Don, the original server may have crashed. Something with the new patch or 109 has made it a bit unstable. We are trying to figure out what is the culprit. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] [Dogs of War] WWII COMBAT SERVER | P-51D - FW190-D9 - Me109-K4 Visit Our Website & Forum to Get More Info & Team Speak Access
CorsairHundo Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Oh ok. I got booted a few times which I wasn't sure why as my ping was 112. Thanks Thanks Ultra. Ultra Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 It doesn't take long to start and takeoff, is it the flight to the mission that is time consuming? I'm new so I don't know? The flight to AO time is good, and I enjoy cold starts and takeoffs as much as the next guy but after a few crashes cold starting begins to eat up a good chunk of time. I would just like the option for an air start sometimes, when I don't have as much time to play as I'd like. Anyways after a good run your going to have to land and cold start that aircraft anyways. It just makes the 'flying time to ground time' ratio better, in my eyes.
gavagai Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 I just gave the new killer bees map a try. I could not start the P-51's engine. In fact, it wouldn't even turn over. We will get you flying again I promise :D I had to wait till after work but I just jumped on the server and cold started 3 different mustangs at Beslan and although they are sluggish with that high oil pressure "bug" it will still start. If you cant get it to catch that way try the oil dilute switch for a few seconds... people are saying that helps. gavagai Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 Yes, it was weird. I've never had that happen on any map before. No trouble starting the P-51 on your other server.
