jfri Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 I have the P51D Mustang and consider the Fw 190. So I would like to know how good it is compared to the Mustang ? I think of things like bundled training lessons missions and campaign and its qualities quality of the documentation Features I would also like to hear about its leaning step. How difficult is to fight in ? Am I correct in thinking that the Fw is a fighter only and therefore there are no kind of bombing missions ?

You need a learning curve for take off and landing. 190 has a snap roll around 300km speed. Other than that, it is a fun plane to fly but I have been 190 Ho from Il2 series.

I wouldn't put alot of weight into training lessons/campaign of any of the WWII planes so far. It is more difficult for most players to learn to takeoff and land but those are things that have to be learned with experience. It is more difficult to employ in combat than the Mustang due to its visibility(long nose) and it doesn't turn as great as the Mustang/109. It requires more discipline to be successful when playing good Mustang pilots online for sure but it carries a large amount of ammo with a good punch. You are able to do bombing with the Dora and there are several missions on the DoW server with ground targets. It is a very easy aircraft to manage once you get it in the air with its advanced engine management system and she is very quick. My favorite aircraft at this point to say the least.
Art-J Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 It does have a couple of training missions, although info given in them is already a bit outdated (there have been some changes in systems modeling and flight dynamics since these missions were created). Plus, landing tutorial mission teaches you perfectly how to crash and burn the plane, and not how to land it :D (opposite of fantastic landing tutorial for Mustang). A couple of "instant" missions are OK for target practicing. The challenge campaign is quite new stuff, and SiTh (the author) is still working on tuning it, so it's too early to judge it. Lack of steerable tailwheel plus lack of rudder and aileron trim makes the plane quite a bit more handful to taxi, take off, land and fly for novice pilot, compared to the Mustang. On the other hand, learning these idiosyncrasies can be fun in itself. Tiny gunsight reflector glass plus lack of rockets makes the plane more annoying/challenging to fight against aerial and ground targets. It does have stellar, hot-rod performance though. All and all, it looks, works and feels very different, compared to P-51, but despite not being into German crates, I like flying it from time to time. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

All true, but also keep in mind that the plane is far more automated and ergonomic than the P-51. The mechanical flight computer that controls various engine parameters (most notably the prop pitch / RPM) was revolutionary for the day and works very well, taking a fair amount of workload off of the pilot. It's very much a 'stick n rudder' plane, without a lot of fiddling about with rads, RPM/pitch, mixture, etc. Flying the FW-190 against the top AI P-51 is currently one of the best AI fights you can get in the game (IMHO). You'll still win all the time, but you usually at least have to work a fair amount for it. weta904 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Hello FW190 drivers, Enjoying the D9 experience. Generally have take-offs and landings under control. Been practicing basic aerobatics - barrel rolls, wingover/hammerhead,etc. A surprising discovery was completing a basic loop was difficult with the 190 stalling at the top. it just does not want to go over, no matter how fast I enter the loop. Maybe I'm just not pulling the stick hard enough? Often seem to get caught out when going upside down in a dogfight. Had a number of attempts at the Instant Action dogfight. I can avoid being shot down for extended periods of time but eventually the P51 gets me with a manouvre kill (ie I make a mistake!). What are the clues to zap a P51?
jfri Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 I have decided to skip the Fw. Instead I just purchased the Black shark 2

For the instant action dogfight in the 190, dump flaps and pull hard after the first pass, full power, flaps up, dive for speed and that will trigger the P-51 pilot to start making the biggest mistake and pull up to a vertical escape. Problem for him is your plane has more power and your fight is in the vertical. Pull up behind him and, if too off angle for a shot, let your aircraft float higher than his, then chase him back down but you need to be in full power all the time. Eventually you will see a P-51 hanging in the air ready to be shot at which point those two cannon on top of your nose should make quick work of him. Called the Butcher Bird for a reason. Same technique works for the 109. Only way I loose is if the P-51 pilot decides to use his sharp turning ability and head-on pass me with guns running. Then something will be broke or, if I am a good shot, turn it against him and head on with cannons. Sad day for him if I score hits. I would love to be able to kill the pilot in a head-on pass and have the pilot counted as damageable as in IL-2 BoS.

I think you are pulling too hard on the loop entry. I was able to do nice loops but you have to ease the FM into the loop. Crumpp Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I just had my first couple of online dogfights. I had no problem turning with a Mustang. That being said, I was not overrunning them either. The planes appear to be very evenly matched in the turning department as they were in reality. I love the FM turning performance. The buffet acts just like it should and stops the turn so whoever has the skill to keep a smooth turn at best rate speed wins the match. Good fight, Fast Freddie! Demon_ Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Fast Freddie? I saw him give many tips to a pilot in the gavagai's server.:drunk: Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
