Su-25 Frogfoot in FC3 - Cold War Warrior Campaign with Tacview

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

This is the Cold War Warrior campaign flown from beginning to end in my usual way, with somewhat of a plan and commentary provided throughout. Tacview is used to display an overlay of the current situation in the top right corner and is used to provide a debrief at the end of the series. I am still experimenting with the format so let me know what you think.

Very cool, looking forward to see how you do. The Cold War Warrior campaign is my baby, I built it for the release of FC2. A lot of things have changed since then, so I hope it is still working well. We played through it again coop in my squad about a year ago. While the AI aircraft did some funky things, the air-ground element still seemed to play well. With the powerful scripting tools we have now, I would build the missions differently today, but I am still quite fond of the work that went into the background scenario :)

A word of advice in advance if I am allowed. The scenario has a conventional war high-threat environment employment of the Su-25 in mind. Flying low and fast, making single maximum effects attack runs with all available weapons. One pass haul a**. Success should be measured in making the assigned strike and returning home safely, regardless of any kill count :)

Part 3 is up...

Thanks for the advice! It really holds up well so far. I can tell a lot of work went into it and I hope I can do it justice.

I love this campaign. I'll be starting this campaign over again as I lost all of my progress at some point.

Yes definitely, especially when the the convoy group disperses and the MANPADS pop up.

Lastly thanks for sharing with us Bunyap. Loving the format.

I too have been inspired by Bunyap to have a go at this campaign.... whats the recommended method of killing tanks in the su25? I would have thought the kmgu's but I'm not getting any kills at all. (and after a weeks worth of practice before work, I AM ACCURATE!!

Depends on the type of armour and the situation.

Depending on the type of armour you could use S-8OFP rockets.

There are S-24s whic are laser guided and will kill any armoured target.

You could carpet bomb a convoy (if they aren't going to shoot back) with FAB-100s or 250s.

Originally I equipped 4 B-8 rocket pods (plus fuel tanks and R-60M) for most missions, including the first one if I remember correctly. Not because it is always the most effective armament, but because rocket pods were heavily used by the Soviet Frontal Aviation. You wont wipe out whole tank columns with this loadout, but I did kill a Leopard-2 every now and then (and I think coming home with even a single tank kill is a job well done). What is more important though, even if the S-8 rocket has small chances to kill a tank, a tank column that has been showered with 80 80mm rockets will not be combat capable again anytime too soon. Of course DCS does not have a ground unit damage model to simulate such finesses, nor a campaign system to support any logistical, tactical or moral implications of such a strike. But you can still consider putting an artillery battalion worth of firepower on an enemy tank column to be a mission success.

It seems the people at ED did not share that line of thought though. At some point the loadouts were adjusted to something ridiculous such as 8 S-25L :)

Interesting.

I originally tried the campaign missions with no external fuel tanks. I thought that was the intention of the mission designer. It's possible to it if you make one pass at the target and turn back without hesitation, but you pretty much run dry by the time you land.

S-24 rockets are not laser guided. S-25 rockets have a laser guided variant (S-25L). All three (S-24, S-25, S-25L) work well against armor, are generally easy to use and accurate. It's my weapon of choice for the Su-25.

My understanding is the S-24 was the most commonly used weapon, but that they were removed from service after a few incidents of the rocket motors causing flame-outs on the firing aircrafts' engines..

Cheers.

Really enjoyed these videos, great commentary, planning explanations etc.

Also a very fun campaign, though difficult in its own way.

On the subject of tank killing, I've found cluster bombs and the KGMU dispensers to be wholly ineffective against MBT's. Looks like I need to give FAB100's or rockets a go.

The S-25 is the younger, bigger brother of the S-24. It's twice as heavy, has better ballistic performance and a bigger warhead. Inspired by Bunyap I did the first two missions of the campaign today and yesterday and I took a load of four S-25s on both. I fired all my missiles in a single run. I managed to kill 2 Leopards in the first mission and 5 or 6 artillery pieces in the second. The rockets are a joy to use :).

Ok, part 4 is up where I land and debrief the first mission. Well, I already flew mission 2 but I'll give the B-8 pods a try at some point.

I won't spoil the next mission but that is the last time I make more than one pass on a target. Mbot has a devious mind. :)

Ah, this campaign is so much fun. I just got through mission four. I got to my station safely despite being tracked by the Phantoms a couple of times and started circling. After a few minutes I got told to turn north and engage an MLRS battery. That got me right in the middle of a dogfight between three Phantoms and a couple of MiG-23s. I got behind one of the Phantoms and hit him with two R-60s but then a Flogger swooped in and stole my kill. Game calls it his, I call it shared :P. In the meantime another Phantom got behind me and fired a few round into me before being taken care of by number two and another Flogger. At this point I had no gunsight and trouble flying straight, but nonetheless I did a few circles and found the battery. I fired my eight S-25s and scored four hits, but no kills. Then I diverted to Maykop and after accidentally flying right over a Roland which, fortunately, was out of ammo, I landed on fumes. Debriefing gave me 0 air and ground kills and a score of 75, but I still had plenty of fun ;).

So nothing much exciting happened then ?

Video 5 that covers the briefing, start-up and takeoff for mission 2 is up. It has actually been up on the channel for a while... I'm cutting the rest of the mission together as we speak so they should follow over the weekend.

Awesome. Eagerly awaiting. Thanks Bunyap.

Great video, and I do like the Tacview. It's interesting to see what was really happening versus what you thought was happening.

Looking forward to the next installment....

That topic brought the campaign back to my mind. Had very much fun flying it but stopped because I had a lack of time and somehow forgot about it... I guess I know what I'll be doing today's afternoon ^^

The only thing that I could dislike about this campaign is the default armament. I remeber flying the first time and had barely fuel left as I arrived on target, although flying quite conservative. Su25 w/o externals is quite... short ranged.

Thanks for the vid's, Bunyap!

Enjoying the series. Thanks.

You mentioned something about the RWR and the lit up triangle indicating a friendly radar. I'm not sure that's right. I tried a quick mission and the little triangle lit up for both friendly and enemy radars.
