Could just be a matter of personal preference, but for me having the screens locked to my view so they move where a look with TIR is more of a hinderance.

 

I'm just thinking it could be a nice option to add down the road, a toggle to have the screens stay locked in place so when you pan around the cockpit they don't obstruct your view. But for now I could just minimize them if needed.

 

After using this yesterday, a far more pressing issue is the performance hit when being forced to use this in windowed mode. I see that you are working on a full screen option, and for a person like me that uses a 30 in 4k monitor for Dcs, this is huge. There is s 25 frame hit for me when I use windowed mode vs full screen mode. It was so bad I had to just disable your app and go back to full screen mode.

 

I love what you are doing with this though, and the color screens are awesome. I really look forward to giving this another shot when the full screen version is done.

Skoop, you are using fullscreen mode with helios, really? Do you export gauges to your touchscreen s well?

 

I am using windowed mode because of Helios and gauges exported to my helios screen. IMHO I have to use windowed mode for such a setup, right?

 

Using UltraMFCD does eat up too many frames in my case. Hence, I am back to 4K + Helios Touchcreen + classic gauges export + windowed mode.

Oops I should up date my sig, I currently don't use a multi monitor setup. My current setup is a single 30 in 4k monitor. I get great performance with this in full screen. I use a trackball with my left hand in the place of a touch screen.

just a thought you do know that when using UMFCD you do NOT have to have the game resolution set to cover both monitors. So you just have it set for the main monitor res. If you do that it should give you a boost even though it is in window mode.

It would be interesting to gather a little more data on this fullscreen vs. windowed thing. For reasons I'm about to explain, there shouldn't, in this day and age, be much if any difference between the two performance-wise.

 

Firstly, what is the difference between the two modes?

 

Without getting excessively technical, there's surprisingly little difference. All the drawing of shapes, management of textures, lighting, shaders and whatnot are identical. The only difference is what happens when the graphics subsystem (DirectX in our case) wants to finally draw all of that stuff to the screen.

 

In fullscreen mode, the draw occurs to the display's backbuffer, which is a section of memory that represents each pixel on the screen. Once all the data is written, a bit of hardware on the graphics card sends that data out of a port, down a cable to your monitor.

 

In windowed mode, there's simply one extra step. In this instance, the display's backbuffer is owned by Windows, and each DirectX/OpenGL/whatever is drawing to a "virtual" screen. When the virtual backbuffer is ready to be displayed, it is copied within the graphics card's memory to the main windows-owned backbuffer and then it's shoved down the cable as before.

 

 

So the extra copy operation is why my FPS is dropping, right?

 

Wrong. This type of memory-to-memory copy operation is something that graphics cards have been designed to perform at the hardware level for years (called a "Blit"). Doing some in-my-head calculations, it would be fair to say that an average graphics card could blit a 4K image at 1000FPS without even breaking a sweat.

 

 

Why does my FPS drop when using UltraMFCD?

 

This is an actual limitation with the way DCS is coded at the moment - specifically the version of DirectX it uses.

 

In order to get the displays out of DCS, I have absolutely no choice other than to copy the data back to system memory. On my system, this takes 3ms per frame of the exported displays (and is why uMFCD has the option to skip frames for the exports). I did perform extensive experiments in order to hack my way around this limitation, but it rendered DCS sufficiently unstable that I would have spent 24/7 chasing reports of mysterious bugs and rendering problems.

 

So, if you suspect Windowed mode is your FPS hit, try running DCS in Windowed mode without UltraMFCD. As it stands, UltraMFCD will reduce the game's FPS by a small amount, although it is entirely dependent on your system config, display settings etc.

 

HOWEVER!

 

It is clear that DCS 2.0 will be using a more modern version of DirectX. This will enable UltraMFCD to completely bypass the FPS hit we experience at present, while maintaining all the functionality we have now, in addition to anything we have planned for the future.

 

So... let's hold our breaths! :)

I think if your app could run in fullscreen mode, it wouldn't have very much performance impact.

Running it in windowed mode is like stepping up to the batter's box with 2 strikes already.

DCS has historically had less performance in windowed mode.

 

I do hope you get it working in fullscreen mode, cause your app is one of the most useful / beneficial things I've seen come out for dcs in a while.

I do appreciate what you're saying here. It is not for me to comment further than the technical difference between Fullscreen/Windowed. :)

 

That said, I recently responded to a PM from the 4K crowd regarding the subject of fullscreen support. The official fe23 line is that implementing complete fullscreen support for DCS 1.x.x.x would nearly certainly involve a complete and costly re-write when DCS 2.0 arrives. It was initially my intention to develop both modes side-by-side, but due to the forces of R&D and beta testing, we established much more in the way of functionality using windowed-only. Thus, forces of demand being what they are, the fullscreen effort was resigned to being a border case given the majority weighting.

 

That's not the end of it, however. It is essential for uMFCD to support fullscreen mode in the future given technologies such as Oculus Rift (true 3D being a speciality of fe23 dating back to appx. 2000), TrackIR and so on and so forth.

 

Without committing to any particular date: It will be implemented when it is sensible to do so.

Love the program! Great work. I think there may be a bug causing DCS to crash during mission loading if you have the "Disable aero interface" option checked. I haven't checked into this too much yet but thought maybe give you a heads up.

 

Also, Can anyone here help me get Helios set up for the MFCD buttons (i like seeing the OSK buttons for realism.

Everything on this program runs fine for me. The only issue I have is when using the MFCD's on a touch screen monitor they tend to move around as I cannot lock them in place once I have selected the size I want them to be .

Works great for my left hand 2nd monitor. But as was stated it stops the "Show controls indicator" Rctrl+Enter , from displaying which I use in the KA-50.

 

A little fps hungry, but I was able to keep the in-cockpit displays and the displays on left monitor by toning down the 1024 to 512 on the inside and 1/2 fps on the external exported displays.

Definitely interested in the finished product.

^I'm not sure if you can. When I set the screens, they move with my view as it pans. It would be preferable to lock the uMFCD exports in a fix postion on screen.

 

@Sgt Baker, I understand about fullscreen dev, nice to know its on the back burner at least.

I may test this again to see if I can dial down some of the settings to soften the fps hit. This app is just so useful I can't go without it. The key toggle for the cdu is worth it alone, not to mention color tgp.

Anyone have any idea? My biggest issue with UltraMFCD is I cannot change the aspect ratio of the windows, so the displays do not fit in with my TM Cougar MFD's

You'll be able to change the aspect ratios freely in the next release by holding shift while dragging the resize handle - already coded up. :)

After something of an election-related hiatus, UltraMFCD development is back to its normal pace. This release contains a whole bunch of technical fixes under the hood, but principally a feature that users have been requesting for ages:

 

A-10C MFCD, CMSC, RWR and Clock can now be resized freely by holding shift while dragging the resize handle. (Similar support for CDU etc. to follow shortly)

Hi, just discovered thread and I intent to use this fabulous peace of software using single big monitor configuration. So my questions are for the options bellow:

 

- Can I hide/close/disable ultra MFCDs on demand (useful on single monitor) ?

- If I can, is rendering of displays capable to be diverted back to in-cockpit and vice versa on demand ? (without needing to be rendering simultaneously on both)

This is one that has been asked before, and will be supported by a key/joystick/mouse-combination of your own choosing in a release in the near future. Additionally, under such circumstances, I can also remove the FPS-hit while all displays are hidden.

 

- If I can, is rendering of displays capable to be diverted back to in-cockpit and vice versa on demand ? (without needing to be rendering simultaneously on both)

 

While this is technically possible, there are a number of reasons (technical and "keeping the complexity sane") why I've not included it.

 

That said, with the ever-delayed advent of DCS 2.0 (which would allow me to remove UltraMFCD's FPS-hit in one go), I'm beginning to entertain the notion of including some highly-sophisticated techniques for completely removing the FPS-hit for 1.x.x.x - however this is because those techniques are of interest to my other fields of work.

Thanks again. Regarding that crash all I can say is this: Something in the underlying works (i.e. not our source code) expects one thing. A compatible component expects a different thing.

Has anyone else had problems with dragging it to a USB display? I have tried dragging to other monitors and it's fine but will not drag to a display link display... I have tried a Lilliput and double sight and can't get it to work... Am I doing something wrong or does it not support use displays... Other than that it's a great product...
