Sorry for the simple question but I just started the SU-25T campaign and am on the first mission. I always get one of two missions. Either a recon mission or a CAS mission.

The briefing always says to provide CAS. Doesn't mention anything about recon. The only reason I know is because I look at the mission planner. There it says "objective". Easy enough.

But on CAS, it is very general. Sometimes "attack units marked with green smoke" or "provide CAS at WP6 or WP7." I can't see the smoke on my mission planner so I have no idea where or what to attack. Maybe I'm missing it but I couldn't find any type of marker. Am I doing something wrong?? I really don't want to do low level flying looking for green smoke with AAA and SAMs trying to blow me out of the sky.

Also, what dictates results? Are there actually tagged units that contribute to mission results? I'm quite old thinking that there is a definite mission success and mission fail, but DCS does not seem to be like that.

Thanks in advance for the help/opinions!

I don't fly the campaigns, but if you load the missions into the ME you can unhide the objects in the mission, which will reveal things like smoke triggers, etc.

DCS does use a score system for determining win/loss. How score is calculated changes with each mssion

The Su-25 relies heavily on the pilot's eyes so try your best to allign yourself with the mission waypoints before flying. Maybe look for noticeable landmarks around a waypoint like lakes, hills, forests, roads, etc.

There is no definite success or fail (unless you die) mostly. There is a hotkey which I don't remember right now that shows you an percentage if when you turn back and land now (or end mission might work too) you would progress to the next one. Alot missions are like real war you kill some targets or just delay some enemies to reach a certain point and you did your mission. Trying to win the war alone and kill everything on the map is not the task...its not a game :)

I am currently fault finding all of the Su-25T campaign missions and most scoring is done on the basis of 50% of mission is completed just by taking off and entering the engagement zone, Points are then awarded to you depending on what you kill, ie 10 points for a tank, 20 for Artillery, 15 for a Sam/AAA, or deducted for what you fail to protect, ie -51 for losing the tank columns you are meant to protect on their way to the objective point, or a defending column of tanks.

I believe the campaign scoring works, that if you have:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

0-49% of mission score, you go back a mission

50% you stay on the same mission

51-100% you progress to the next mission.

Faults found with the Su-25T campaigns are quite many and varied but I will list the most common issues:

------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------

Mission - ATO-A-P1.1.miz

------------------------

- Triggers

- Fixed Green Signal flares not firing on front line tanks

- Added Win and Loss messages.

- Units

- G-ARTY1, G-ARTY2 - Fixed entries, missing type of artillery

------------------------

------------------------

Mission - ATO-A-P4.2.miz

------------------------

- Triggers

- Changed green smoke markers to Orange as described in Mission Brief

------------------------

------------------------

Mission - ATO-A-P5.3.miz

------------------------

- Triggers

- Added Win and Loss messages.

- Changed Colored smoke from green to orange to line up with task description of target area

- DS trigger added to active the RU advancing Ground Task force

-

- Units

- RU-AH - Set to Late activation, to match trigger activation

- Ru-Cas - Set to Late activation, to match trigger activation

- Ground Task force Rtank1, Rtank2, Rtank3, rtank cmd made late activation so as to advance when player is overhead ready to strike

- Repositioned GTank2, Gtank3, gtank4, gtank5, as way to close to allied tanks at mission start and killing allied tanks way to quick

------------------------

Specified Waypoints in Mission are also mostly incorrect.

Hope this helps you,

Kind Regards, Ian.

Open the mission in mission editor. Navigate to campaign folder, mission name can be derived from briefing. There is either switch (-/-) or -[]- icon where you can find how mission is scored. Its usually DEAD condition and +20 for enemy -20 for friendly group. As was stated before you need to score more than 50 to succeed. Look up unit names that contribute do score, its usually every unit on the map. So key to success is to protect your units and take out entire enemy groups. Don't hesitate to help friendly units away from your apparent objective area. There is one particular mission where it seems that you are responsible for stopping enemy advance through the bridge, but you really should help your units at right flank first.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

I really don't want to do low level flying looking for green smoke with AAA and SAMs trying to blow me out of the sky.

Thats the challenge though, particularly in a CAS scenario. If it were easy to avoid the AAA or SAMs while completing the mission then they'd be totally pointless wouldn't they.

There's only so much you can do from medium/high altitude, particularly with thin intel and an airplane that isn't built for doing CAS at high alt.

Embrace the danger.

Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.

Everyone, thanks so much for the feedback. Especially the insight on how things are scored. I know it's not a "game" but I want to go into a mission with something to accomplish. Points are pointless (hehe) but I still like to rack up the mission success score.
