This has been asked numerous times before.

Since the visual vapour cone is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions, don't count on it being implemented in DCS World anytime soon.

The sound is there. Just fly supersonic and press F3. You will hear a bang when you fly past the camera.

The sound gets deeper with distance, so if you press F11 and overfly the selected airbase at altitude, you will hear a deep boom.

Even though when the MACH needle reaches 1 and cross checked with altitude then having a subtle visual effect would be more realistic then having non., IMO.

AI SU-17 outputs black substance on takeoff when viewed from a distance. Is it a disaster? It’s a question of balance.

I've talked to multiple pilots of supersonic aircraft and they said they don't really know when they break the sound barrier. One guy even said that the only way he knows is when he looks at the ground and says, "Oh sh*t, I'm going fast." and then looks at the mach.

Just to show the difference in effect for varying atmospheric conditions.

Here are two pictures of Rafales close to the sound barrier.

The first one is flying under a heavy overcast, in a light drizzle.

The second one has slightly better conditions (no rain, breaking overcast).

Both are flying at roughly the same speed - Mach 0.95

Can't see much difference there myself - unless you mean the paint on the wings

There is another in-cockpit effect - it goes very quiet as you go supersonic. Check it out in the MiG-21.

No, it's just that the noise from the wind becomes very loud and drowns the engine noise a bit but there is no noticeable difference in actual engine noise.

You're sitting right on top of the engine(s) and it doesn't matter how fast the aircraft goes - it won't sound any different.

I am talking about what you hear in the MiG-21. It does get quieter, that's all.

I was talking about the MiG as well and at least in the MiG-21 Module I'm flying there is no difference when you go over Mach 1.

Edit: The only thing that changes is the wind noise which starts to drown out the engine noise. But you can notice this effect even below Mach 1. It's just not as pronounced and it becomes more and more noticeable the faster you go. It has nothing to do with going over Mach 1.

Solo Turk

Took this series of pictures of an F-16 last summer, it was sitting at the cusp of being supersonic, certainly there was a loud CRACK as it went past me, it was not a boom like we hear from the other F-16s when they are at altitude when they exceed M1.0

The third picture was about when the Crack was heard and he was slowing down in the 4th pic.

There is about 0.3seconds between each picture

First pic: thick streams of vapour from the canards, no visible cones over the wings and intakes. Vapour cloud over the cockpit behind the pilot's head.

Second pic: thin streams of vapour from the canards, visible vapour cones around the intakes and the wings. Vapour cloud over the cockpit right above the pilot's head.

Another one, taken on the same day as the first Rafale shot, showing the actual shock waves under the intake and over the trailing edge of the wing (look carefully, you will notice faint vertical lines where the pressure differences are)

Any faster and he would have gone supersonic.

Just sitting here reading this thread and B-Boom another F-16 goes Mach about town

:pilotfly:

There have been a lot recently, sometimes it is months between the sonic booms but over the past month or so we have been having at least one a week. Fairly rattles the windows and doors :D
