Hi everyone, new to DCS and I have few concerns I'd like some information on please.

 

Why does the Mig29 do 1700kmh on the deck? Isn't this too fast for this plane?

 

Why are my aircraft handling like a 1990s arcade game on the ground? Is their a setting that I am missing? The SU33 in particular swivels and changes direction like a bird's head when taxiing at low speeds. It is absolutely ridiculous.

MiG-29 and Su-33 are the only aircraft which still has old physics models from LOMAC / FC era.

 

Their ground handling and flight model does not represent DCS, they kind of are relics currently.

I see. That's a pity even the basic parameters such as maximum speed could not be simulated. I was quite alarmed.

 

1700kmh for a Mig29 on the deck- it seems far faster than the real figure, but now it appears that this Mig29 and SU33 are not 'DCS' per se. Seems rather strange to include them.

They are from the old Lock On series which was not focused as much on realism. They brought them into DCS so that fans of the Lock On series could enjoy the planes in the updated game engine and terrain of DCS. It's something people were asking for, and Eagle Dynamics answered their prayers.

 

Hopefully these will be updated at some point, so that they fit better into DCS World. They have already done so with Su-25, Su-27, A-10 and F-15C. Su-33 was also updated, but not as much as the others. It got the 6dof cockpit and new 3d model, but still has the old flight dynamics from Lock On.

 

So it's history you see. DCS has it's roots in Lock On and the Flaming Cliffs series. Many fans of those older games appreciate that these planes were brought into DCS.

 

Don't treat them as DCS content. Don't judge DCS for having them included. Judge DCS by using the DCS-branded modules instead. No one is forcing you to use these Lock On/Flaming Cliffs stuff.

The SU-33 taxi's crazy because it has to. The nose gear swivles 90 degrees left or right because it's an carrier aircraft.

Makes sense. I see now that the SU27 and F15 were released as stand-alone DCS modules, but not the Mig29 and Su33.

 

By the way, is it perhaps that the Mach 1.225 sea level statistic for the Mig29 is a do not exceed limit, and that the real plane actually has the thrust capability to power past this level speed?

Yes, that is a possibility.

 

Of course if you hit never exceed speed you should be paying for it, but it's just not implemented.

 

For example, NASA has flown their F-15 to M2.7, but you won't see the eagle in this game doing that - NASA tweaked the engines a bit, plus in a fighting aircraft, you'd be basically 'eating up' the engines and might cause the aircraft to end up in a lengthy engine inspection.

 

The limit for the F-15 is M2.5 at high altitude, which is a 'transient 1 minute operation' ... at lower altitudes, the limit it the never exceed speed of 800KIAS.

 

Exceed that and you should see ailerons tearing off and other fun things. Again, not implemented yet.

 

As for the Su-33 taxi, it uses the old FM, so it does indeed have some crazy taxi capabilities. Even though it has to taxi on a carrier, it would be doing those really really sharp turns at walking pace, not the 30-50kts that people drive it at :)

I got the Mig-29A clean up to 895 knots at sea level, checked on the F2 outside view, latest FC3 version. Which is about 100 knots too fast, but the engines can be tuned for low altitude performance. I got the F-15C up to 815 knots. A little fast but not too bad. Still Lock On, FC1, FC2, FC3 you think they would have fixed it up a bit by now.
