Ironhand Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I had a few extra minutes this morning and was experimenting with EOS. There were friendlies and hostiles in the mission. As we know, EOS doesn't IFF your intended target. Just to see what would happen, I locked a friendly and told my AI wingnut to: "Attack my target". I expected him to say: "Negative". Instead, he said: "Copy". And then splashed the target. So be careful with that in any mission you're flying. Another interesting note is that, while he used an R-73 to make the kill, he turned on his radar to do it. My Berioza started screaming just before he launched. So in theory, at least, he should have known that the target was a friendly prior to the launch. This is something the devs might want to change. At least remove the radar lock warning from the player's cockpit so that you can continue to believe that he never turned it on. :) YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU1...CR6IZ7crfdZxDg _____ Win 11 Pro x64, Asrock Z790 Steel Legend MoBo, Intel i7-13700K, MSI RKT 4070 Super 12GB, Corsair Dominator DDR5 RAM 32GB.
Bourrinopathe Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Thanks for the report Ironhand. That's an interesting point on the AI (mis)behavior ;) I'm wondering if the AI keeps its radar off in the same situation when it has been ordered to do so (comms: Radar off). There's definitely something to improve here. Maybe you should report the radar lock with the R-73 as a bug in a specific post for visibility? (I'll try to test the AI EOS lock + R-73 + radar off order when I can afford the time) /// ВКБ: GF Pro MkII+MCG Pro/GF MkII+SCG L/Black Mamba MkIII/Gladiator/T-Rudder MkII | X-55 Rhino throttle/Saitek Throttle Quadrant | OpenTrack+UTC /// ZULU +4 /// /// "THE T3ASE": i9 9900K | 64 GB DDR4 | RTX 2080ti OC | 2 TB NVMe SSDs, 1 TB SATA SSD, 12 TB HDDs | Gigabyte DESIGNARE mobo ///
OnlyforDCS Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Ironhand, would you consider making an EOS tutorial at some point? :music_whistling: Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.
Ironhand Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Thanks for the report Ironhand. That's an interesting point on the AI (mis)behavior ;) I'm wondering if the AI keeps its radar off in the same situation when it has been ordered to do so (comms: Radar off)... I think they do. Or seem to, anyway. ...(I'll try to test the AI EOS lock + R-73 + radar off order when I can afford the time) I hadn't thought of trying that. Be interesting to see what happens. Ironhand, would you consider making an EOS tutorial at some point? :music_whistling: Not sure it needs an entire tutorial devoted to it. You can't shift it right or left like radar, just up or down. The big thing is to realize that, unlike radar where the higher the return is on the HUD, the farther away it is (range information), EOS is showing you the altitude differential. So the higher on the HUD the return, the more above you it is. If the return is on a level with the aircraft datum, then it's level with you. Below it and it's below you. Once you wrap your head around that, what you're seeing on the HUD makes much more sense. EDIT: Bourrinopathe, if you tell him to turn radar off, he launches without using radar. nickexists Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 You can't shift it right or left like radar, just up or down. Sure you can. Doesn't work in the mig, but in the flanker you can go left and right just like the radar.
Bourrinopathe Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) From what I've experienced with a custom mission (1 B-52 + 1 Tu-95 about 20 km ahead), the wingman AI behavior was inconsistent, even with an AI level set to "excellent". Even with the "radar off" order, the wingman sometimes fires a R-27ET while briefly using the radar (and R-27ER when out of ET). I would assume the "radar off" order does not mean "keep the radar off" in an offensive action. In any case, the wingman attacks the assigned target (friend or foe). What a dedication to the leader ;) -------- As nickexists said, the OLS can be oriented to the left/center/right (just like the radar) and +/- 15 levels per increment of one level (elevation). As the negative elevation of the OLS-27 is limited to -15°, I don't know how the 15 negative levels affect the sensor orientation (the second negative level seems to reach the max negative angle). If I recall correctly the OLS-27 search angle is limited to +/-60° in azimuth and +60°/-15° in elevation. Ironhand Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Excellent info concerning the EOS. Don't know what made me think it didn't shift right or left. The visual cue for it's right-left orientation is right there at the bottom of the HUD. Good info on the wingnut's behavior as well. Obviously, be careful what you tell him to do. He is very "dedicated". solidusbucket Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 From what I've experienced with a custom mission (1 B-52 + 1 Tu-95 about 20 km ahead), the wingman AI behavior was inconsistent, even with an AI level set to "excellent". Even with the "radar off" order, the wingman sometimes fires a R-27ET while briefly using the radar (and R-27ER when out of ET). perhaps he is using radar and eos at same time. Once he has the LA for the ET missile, he switches off radar and fires. This is what I noticed that the AI does when I face them.
Bourrinopathe Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 The AI may be afflicted by some kind of chivalry syndrome then, because that's bashing the horn while you're sneaking behind your target to slit its throat. "Thanks wingnut… they're all yours." "Katapul'tiruysya!" he says… (the R-27ET=39 kg TNT equivalent, the R-73=7,4 kg TNT equivalent - we'd prefer the ET to hit safely ;) ) /// ВКБ: GF Pro MkII+MCG Pro/GF MkII+SCG L/Black Mamba MkIII/Gladiator/T-Rudder MkII | X-55 Rhino throttle/Saitek Throttle Quadrant | OpenTrack+UTC /// ZULU +4 /// /// "THE T3ASE": i9 9900K | 64 GB DDR4 | RTX 2080ti OC | 2 TB NVMe SSDs, 1 TB SATA SSD, 12 TB HDDs | Gigabyte DESIGNARE mobo ///
Frostie Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Excellent info concerning the EOS. Don't know what made me think it didn't shift right or left. The visual cue for it's right-left orientation is right there at the bottom of the HUD. You possibly got confused with the Mig-29 which still moves left and right on the display but actually only stays fixed on the nose, it also has no elevation increments instead being fixed it relies on the nose pitch of the aircraft for elevation. A tutorial on the differing types of EOS, OLS-27 and KOLS (MiG-29) would be good. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. Tello Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 I only started using the wingmen. I have been thinking why I can not tell them to only use EOS instead of going full music. And thank you many times for your fantastic guides on the various systems. Being new to DCS it helped me to understand that there is still a lot of manual work to get a splash. I try to keep reminding my self: Not what I can see that matters. It is what I can not see. ;) heh [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
