leafer Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Here are the parts I bought to replace my dead computer. Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3 + i3 4160 LiteOn S900 128 gig SSD I don't have money for OS so I downloaded Windows 8.1 Enterprise 90 days demo. I should have enough money to buy genuine serial in three months. Now, how to create bootable DVD and install Windows 8 to this SSD? Is there something special or step(s) I should be aware of? I just wanna do it right the first time. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
leafer Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 I figured it out; it was actually pretty easy. Microsoft has a free tool to make bootable disk. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
SkateZilla Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Use a 16 GB USB stick, installs in like 10 minutes or less. Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
leafer Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 After installing windows 8 it doesn't see one of my drives. In Disk Management it shows up as "Disk 1 Dynamic Errors". Reactivate Disk didn't work. The other option wants me to format which I definitely not gonna. What I do? ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
BitMaster Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 1: I hope you have a backup, if not, you now know why you should make one while you can and not wait for disaster to happen. 2: As I don't know what caused your crash, it might have well been something that originates from your drive, thus it has a little problem - or - the crash happened and took the integrity of your drive along to the bin. The latter one would be logical error only, the first one could be hw failure too but may be software only as well. 3: How large is your drive ? Has it been your OS drive before ? Bigger than 2TB ? You might want to connect that drive to another PC via a USB adapter and check the drive, backup files manually that you really don't want to miss and generally have a look at the drive, it's SMART values and warnings, and how it is partitioned. 4. Ask a friend who is near by and have him come over to have a look !!! From what I read I think you are that close from loosing data if you haven't already. Bucic Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 HDD or SDD? If it's HDD, avoid hooking it up until you have everything needed for emergency copy of your most important files I.e. a second drive and a liveusb Linux like Ubuntu. No matter if HDD or SSD, checking them on a liveusb system will tell you if the problem is with your disk or with your current Windows install. To copy any bootable ISO image onto a bootable usb drive use USBwriter or unetbootin. leafer Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 All my 3d models are gone. Anyways, thanks. No, I don't have friends with a pc to hook it up to. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but windows sees that drive now but it's empty. It's a WD 500 gig black but windows only detect 465 gig. No idea where 35 of it went and I really don't want to fiddle with it anymore. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

If the disk appears empty, be it on windows or on liveusb Linux, in 90% of cases the data are easily restorable using TestDisk. It's a command line tool but it can be handled if you have someone on the line guiding you through. The difference between GTB and TestDisk is that GTB may brake some files (artifacts on images, squeeks on music files etc.), garbled file names... Also GTB seems to do that awkward scanning process no matter the circumstances when actually the data are right there, just not visible due to minor errors in the 'file system table of contents' etc. Example: You've mistakingly went with 'Create new partition table' on the disk containing data. You've even confirmed whenever asked and restarted the system. GTB proceeds like you've just dug the disk up from under the ground and dropped it in the process :) TestDisk knows nothing has actually happened to your data. The 'table of contents is just wrong' so TestDisk restores the right 'table of contents' and doesn't touch your data. Result: Your data are there like nothing has ever happened. If it's unable to proceed like this but it sees the data, it will let you copy them low-level, without touching the data structure, attributes, nothing. BitMaster Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 BACKUP ? You dont do time consuming 3d models and dont back them up. do you ? Well, if yes, you should rethink that habbit and get an external drive and download freefilesync ... that is all you need for backing up files and folders. many more methods are around, anyone that you actually DO is a good one ! I have had many people knocking on my door with bad drives but when you tell them how long Data Recovery usually takes with bad drives no one wants to pay you :( I then hand them the price list from Convar, they have a facility near by, 30 min by car, yikes.. they stop asking and turn silent. Nothing really goes below a grand and if you have TONS of data you better have a big wallet and some time ! just my 2 cents why this thread could be avoided by the OP and hopefully others. It's important to note that you can always complement GTD with TD. Neither of them does anything until you command them to. BACKUP ? Bit Indeed. Last year I've finally got myself a 1 TB external USB drive exclusively for backups. Clonezilla* turns my system partition with 25 GB of data into a 15 GB file in less than 10 minutes I think. *I've bought PartedMagic which is a liveusb/livecd rescue Linux. leafer Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 Even the stuff I burned to DVDs, I've no idea where some of them are now. I'm not the most organized person, unfortunately. I vividly recall sitting here thinking I should back up these models but I never did. I guess part of it is I always add this and that to them and figured I'd back it up when I'm 100% satisfied. Another part is I just didn't think this would happen. I have a ten-year-old HDD that's still running in this system, and the WD where I stored all the models is only four years old. I don't know what the hell is wrong with me. It probably takes less than ten mins. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
