jcbak Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 When used on the radio, is BUK pronounced as a word (it means Beech in Russian) or are the letters spoken individually? I know the different SAMS included in the BUK system have their own names...so I'm confused. If it is pronounced like a word, is it pronounced "BUCK" or "BUKE?" According to the speech output of Google Translate, it sounds similar to english "book". ;o)
jcbak Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Regarding radio protocol, is it pronounced as a word or are the letters spoken individually? lmp Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 It's not an acronym of any sort, so it's pronounced as one word. As Flagrum wrote, it sounds like "book". Also, there's no need to capitalize the whole word.
jcbak Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Thank you for the quick response...everyone. SFJackBauer Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I'd think a military english speaker would say "SA-11" on the radio...
OutOnTheOP Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I'd think a military english speaker would say "SA-11" on the radio... Close; I believe "buk" is pronounced "gadfly" in English. NATO has standard reporting names for a reason.
SFJackBauer Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Close; I believe "buk" is pronounced "gadfly" in English. NATO has standard reporting names for a reason. Tell to this Viper pilot on 3:06 that he should have said "Guideline" instead of SA-2.
OutOnTheOP Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) Tell to this Viper pilot on 3:06 that he should have said "Guideline" instead of SA-2. You're correct, he should have. Even the use of plain (American) English "ess eh" phonetic letters is a breach of radio procedure; they are easily misunderstood with f and j or k, respectively. Hence "sierra alpha". But yes, "guideline" is correct Still, nowhere do I hear them say anything about a "Dvina". Do you? Edited March 27, 2015 by OutOnTheOP
