What is the difference between the Lock Target and Cage Shkval seeker in the Ka-50? The Su-25T doesn't have an uncage Skval seeker option and the Lock/Unlock target is sufficient.

Uncage Shkval takes your Shkval out of its resting position. You should see your Shkval monitor now display camera. Also, if you hold down the uncage Shkval and you have your HMS on you will be able to slew your Shkval to wherever you point your head. Useful if you have gun selected, as your gun will point where your head is looking(within its limits).

You can re-cage your Shkval by pressing the targeting mode reset push button, and your Shkval will go back to its resting position, and your Shkval monitor will return to its test screen.

Lock target, locks an object(in daylight conditions, or if sufficient illumination over target at night) in your Shkval. And if your laser is turned on it will then give you a distance to target information as well as weapon systems info in your hud.

Basically your SU-25 doesn't have to beat the air into submission while flying. Helicopters produce a lot of vibration, so to prevent excessive damage to your Shkval sensors it is best to leave it in "caged" position. Not sure if vibration damage to the shkval is actually modeled in DCS.

Reaper6 So essentially I only need to uncage the Shkval sensor at startup once and forget about the whole thing altogether? It's just that on several occasions I couldn't unlock the destroyed target by pressing Lock and pressing uncage Shkval sensor helped...

I would only "uncage" once you are ready to start engaging targets, or searching for targets. This will leave your HUD in Navigation mode vs Weapon Mode.

Generally if you zoom to target with the Shkval, lock the target, destroy target. it will be a few seconds before you can start slewing your Shkval again. Or if you have engaged a tank, they do not explode right away. So if the tank is burning, just zoom out and that will realease the lock. Also you can use your HMS and point somewhere else then press uncage shkval it will release the lock.

Lock does not unlock a target, it simply will fire the laser ranger again to update the distance to target.

Another useful feature is if you have a target saved as a datalink point on the ABRIS (whether saved into memory by you or received from another Ka-50), when you select it, and push DL INGRESS button on the datalink panel, it will give you steering cues in the HUD, give you a navigation range to target, and when you uncage your Shkval it will automatically slew your Shkval line-of-sight to that location. Uncaging the Shkval while having a NAV/TGT point selected on the PVI will function the same way. After that just tap the lock button to lock it up and laser range it.

Just make sure you deselect that datalink point or NAV/TGT point when your done, otherwise it will keep slewing your Shkval each time you uncage from weapons RESET. And sometimes it might not get right on target, but it should put the target in the Shkval field-of-view.

Afterburners are for wussies...hang around the battlefield and dodge tracers like a man.

If using the HMS, the cage/uncage key is used to slew the camera to where you are looking. It isn't accurate enough to aim, but it's a quick way to get the brackets near the target before fine tuning your aim with the slew hat.

My general approach to attacking is as follows:

1) HMS on

2) Cage/uncage

3) HMS off

4) Fine tune aim with slew

5) Lock

6) Fire

If targets are clustered, I skip the 3 HMS steps for rough aiming. If the targets are widely spaced, I'll start over at step 1. I'm able to attack targets rapidly using this technique. Once done with the targets or repositioning, I'll reset the system. This turns the camera off and returns the HUD to navigation mode. I use reset so often it is mapped to my joystick along with the HMS and normal lock button.
