yoevro Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Hi, everyone. I'm currently in the market for a new display of some sort, but i'm not sure what would be the best way to go with this. I can spend about $400..$450 if its REALLY worth it. I currently have a single Gigabyte GTX-970 G1. I've been looking at a few options (1080p, 2k, or 4k resolution), and am looking for some suggestions. I'm trying to keep a standard of no less than 50-60 fps with everything maxed, but for better resolutions, 40 would probably be somewhat bearable. would this card be able to run 2k at 60 fps? 4k? Also, I'm very interested in the oculus rift. anyone had experience with this? I've heard mixed messages about it. obviously stereoscopic vision would be amazing, but does the lower resolution really make it unusable for dogfights and such? Also, i read that the consumer version is hitting at winter this year. would it be wise to hold onto my money and just get one of those instead of a new monitor? thanks for your answers guys. i know i have a lot of questions here. Any info is appreciated! Greekbull Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 With one 4k monitor you'd be able to run 30-45fps on a single Gtx 970 provided everything else in your system is up to date. If looks pretty good and runs relatively smooth. I went ahead and went SLI and got a second Gtx 970. I'm able to get steady over 60fps Now. As high as the 90s depending on the terrain and height I'm flying. yoevro Posted May 5, 2015 Author Posted May 5, 2015 Thanks for the info! 4k is starting to look like a good solution. As of now I'm at 1280x1040 or something. It's hideous, I know. Would there be any drawback to running the sim at less than native res until I can afford a second card? Rangi Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) Be aware that unless you buy a large 4k screen, things are going to be pretty small. For me anything less than 32" at 4k is to small, but that's just my opinion. I have a 32" 2k screen that I am pretty happy with as a good compromise between high resolution and size. I recently acquired an ACER XB280HK 4K monitor with G-Sync and at 4K I simply cannot read the onscreen communication messages. Am currently running at 2560X1440 and am pleased at that res. Even with that some of the GUI screens are difficult to adjust to. SharpeXB Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I have a 4K screen and the sharpness is amazing, particularly in DCS. But be wary that running games at this res is extremely demanding. I also have a GTX Titan X and even that card won't run many games at Ultra settings and 60fps. For that it would probably take two! But DCS handles 4K pretty well with it. For most games running them at 1440 and upscaling to 4K looks very good. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
yoevro Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Actually got my monitor in today. Found a good deal on a nice 2k monitor that I couldn't pass up. I figured 4k would probably be pushing it for the single 970 that I have now. I'm still loving it even though it isn't 4k. Spotting aircraft is 100 times easier now.
