why is a carrier called a boat? Isn't that the only name to a submarine reserved by purists of the navy? Shouldn't it be called a ship?

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

interesting question, maybe because it looks so small from a flying aircraft point of view?

or maybe something like life boat, as it might be the only survivable area to return to?

While the commanding officer of a ship is called the "captain" regardless of rank, in the case of an aircraft carrier, the captain wears the rank of a Naval Captain as well. Aviators do render proper deference to the "Captain" who is always a Naval Aviator (or Flight Officer), but they do not refer to the aircraft carrier as a ship, instead preferring to call it a what? Boat. Although some feel this is a slight to the long tradition of Naval etiquette, aviators call an aircraft carrier anything but its formal name fully aware that this bothers traditional Surface Line officers who command or serve on "ships". "Going to the boat" means flying out to the carrier, "hitting the boat" means landing. "flat top" was popular int he early days of carrier aviation when battleships vied with aircraft carriers to be THE capital ship of choice. "Steel beach" is a more precise term used for the flightdeck when flight operations are secure and the flight deck is used for either recreation or picnic type events. "Bird Farm" is a nickname used by surface sailors who man the escort ships in a Carrier Strike Group (CSG) by not favored by aviators.

sounds a bit like "i'm airman, not mariner, so i call it boat, not ship ;)

I served on the U.S.S. Independence. We called her, Indy, Chicken of the Sea, Flat-top, Ship, and maybe a few other names, but we didn't call her a "boat". I just scanned through my 1961-61 cruise book (The Profile) and all references I found were "ship".

Calling her a "boat" would have been as inappropriate as calling a "piece" a gun. Piece is the naval term for a rifle, for example. A"Gun" is that big old cannon that goes boom on a destroyer or similarly armed vessel. lol

In the culture of Naval Aviation an aircraft carrier is a boat. All aviation officers and ratings call it a boat. The black shoes hate it and that's why we do it.

Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills.

Hello!

Marine engineer speaking here.

The definition of a ship is that it has to be larger than 12 meters long and 4 meters wide. If it's smaller then it is a boat, but in most cases it's fine to say boat for anything that fits the definition of a ship.

A ship can carrier a smaller boat and a boat doesn't.
This is an often cited description but it's not a formal definition, so not entirely correct. Edited by Brisse

Wow, so its an aviation-navy product... Figures... I know 100% that submariners call their subs as boats... At least back in Fleet boat days... I think its legit because its Fleet Boat. Destroyers are often called tin cans... Thanks to real and academics who dropped in.
