I have been flying corporate aircraft for 15 years. This year, I finally got a type rating in an amazing aircraft. The Gulfstream 550. And, the most fun thing in training was using the HUD! All my years of flying DCS A10C (and other military sims in the past) made the transition to using the HUD so easy! It was so natural to use it because of all my simming. The instructors had said a lot of people take a long time (or some people, never) to get used to it. Thank you DCS!

I took this picture while sitting on the ground in Boston, and figured this group of people will appreciate it. I had sent it to some (non-pilot, non simming) friends and they didnt appreciate the "coolness" factor. I figured I would put it here because you would all understand, haha.

P.S. Not sure why the pic is coming up distorted. Looks ok when I was attaching it.

Very cool!

I love to see things showing how much DCS is connected to real life.

By the way, I think it's only distorted in the thumbnail. It opened fine.

It's nice to hear what you say. imho this kind of simulation can be a real support in learning "the real thing" - both at a general level, giving a feel of what flight looks like from the cockpit of an aircraft, but also in more particular ways. In fact, flight simulators have been used for years by schools and academies, to make cadets much more ready when they get to the cockpit: and also by consummate professional pilots, who often keep practicing in simulators situations which would be too costly to recreate in rl.

And, being our favorite sim, DCS world, probably the most realistic and better looking /sounding/feeling commercially available software in the category, it's not a surprise that folks working in real cockpits feel it is a very useful tool.

Anyway, very nice pic! - I downloaded it and when opened, it looks correctly orientated

I confirm it can help .

I'm working in the field of avionics but my education is not related to it.

Having a basic understanding and knowledge of aircraft systems is certainly a plus, don't forget to talk about during your interviews ;)

Super!

But the plane was sitting on the gear not on the side, right? :D

j/k

If you use a camera or software that knows to read orientation information from the picture it will display it correctly but when you upload it to a site usually it gets aligned with default settings.

Awww, you left the EVS off, I took a shot through a 450's HUD once, the EVS is a really cool effect. Congrats on the type rating by the way.

PS: saw the tail number, next time you're coming to KLEB gimme a shout.

Thanks for all the replies!

@USSInchon -- It may have been a bit too light out yet for the EVS to look right ( although possibly). Actually, I havent flown the actual plane at night yet so I have not had a chance to mess with the EVS. Looking forward to it.

For anyone wondering, the EVS ( Ehanced Vision) is a FLIR camera that will display its image through the HUD ( and you can display on the screens as well). One use, in good weather, is being able to spot wildlife on runways. You can also avoid driving over chocks on a dark ramp! Its pretty amazing. I will try to get some more pics up in the next few weeks.
