Igor4U Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Howdy Stangers ! I enjoy Dog-Fighting that Pesky German in his FW-190. But as I try to square the corners trying to keep said Bandit in sight; I lkose track of my exact energy state. Without Force Feedback and other real world clues (Noise, seat of the pants, etc...), I can reach or exceed Stall AoA and the Mustang has a quick and snappy departure. Easy to recover, but now I have to regain energy and make up lost angles on the German. Questions: - Did the real P-51D have an Aural AOA indicator or Stall Warning that would help the pilot while he was eyes outside straining to keep sight ? - Are there any Plugins for DCS World Birds that add that feature (Aural Tone as you reach High AoA telling you stop pulling on the pole) ? THANX ! PS: The bottom of the screen readout on Airspeed and Altitude is Helpful, but an Aural Tone for the P-51D would keep that German Pilot awake at Night !
Echo38 Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 As far as I know, no Second World War fighter had a stall horn. In DCS: P-51D, there is an audible change in the whistle of the airflow over the gun ports, as you increase angle of attack, so if you hear the whine, back off a bit.
Tucano_uy Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 DCS:Mustang provides a very visible buffet effect, if it starts to shake, it's time to ease on the stick. I'm afraid you need to get used to it.
Zabuzard Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 More training :) As others said you can first hear (whistle-tone) and then see (shaking) if you move such that your Pony doesn't like it. I really like this feature among all other DCS modules. I would say that in the Mustang you get a great feedback of your inputs. Just train more, then you'll get the feeling too :)
Igor4U Posted June 7, 2015 Author Posted June 7, 2015 (edited) Thanks Fellers - Copy All ! Need more Stick Time to be familiar with the Clues of impending departure. Part of my problem is that I fight Air-to-Air from Chase View and don't hear Cockpit Noises and don't sense the visible Buffet of the Air-frame from a Pilot's Perspective. I use Chase View for Dog-Fighting simply because it's easier to keep the opponent is sight (using HOTAS View controls). Come to think of it - I wouldn't hear an Aural AoA tone anyway being outside the Aircraft. Guess it's time for me to start flying in the Pilot's Seat. Edit: Just verified what you'll told me. Exactamundo ! Great Pre-Stall/Departure Buffet telling you to quit pulling on the pole & think I heard the Gun Whistle too ! THANX ! Edited June 7, 2015 by Igor4U added comment
Paganus Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 DCS:Mustang provides a very visible buffet effect, if it starts to shake, it's time to ease on the stick. I'm afraid you need to get used to it. I necro'd this to add, a metal rattling sound would be a great aural enhancement to go along with the buffet. There are times I can't see any part of my aircraft (looking strait up) and a sound cue for nearing departure would be welcome. The air flow change can be hard to notice over the engine. Really enjoy this old bird. Thanks for the continued support ED team.
Echo38 Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 If a P-51 makes a metal rattling sound whenever you approach stall AoA, something is very broken and you should land immediately, if not prepare to bail out.
Paganus Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Really? I have never flown in a real p-51 shuddering from near stall conditions, but I have been in other airplanes, and even in large modern passenger jets, everything in the cabin rattles when it shudders from turbulence.
Echo38 Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Turbulence from wind isn't the same as near-stall buffeting. Either way, I've never heard a rattling sound in the small planes I've flown, either from turbulence or when performing a slow-stall. Airliners, being larger, have much more play in them. For example, the Cessna 152 has a few inches of flex at the wingtips, while an airliner's wingtips can flex several feet. That sort of thing might explain the rattling you hear on an airliner.
HotTom Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Having a force feedback stick is a huge (or Yuge as Bernie would say) plus. I know. No one makes them these days but the Microsoft Sidewinder is still available on ebay and at Amazon. With the P-51 it starts shaking as you approach stall. Plenty of warning. My Logitech G940 is still running fine and I wouldn't fly a prop fighter without it. Exceptional engineering...and a large hammer to make it fit!
