IKEA office chair TM Warthog installation

Recommended Posts

Posted

So I decided to modify my IKEA office chair. Due to the fact that I don’t have a dedicated gaming space I had to come up with the way to make my Warthog removable when not in use. The outcome is great. Installation takes maybe 30 seconds turning my home office chair into flight seat and its as easy as sliding in the stick and the throttle into position and thats it. Adjustable spring plungers in the base plate keep the plates tight.

If anyone is interested in similar mod I can upload more pics and plan I made for cutting.

Good work. Posts like this always make me reconsider my current set up; there's always room for improvement! :)

Did you put the bolts right though the soft seat of the chair to attach the big plate to the bottom?

Nope. Nothing protrude into the foam of the chair. I was lucky with the chair base which offered 8 mounting holes I used to install my plate firmly.

Wheels are not a problem. They sink deep into the carpet. I actually had more issue with the rotation of the chair when operating the pedals. But when I lowered chair and added buttkicker the chair is not rotating so easly. I'm planning to add some kind of rotation lock but still thinking how to bite it.

I use an ordinary office chair with wheels, and a set of Saitek combat rudder pedals pushed up against a level that acts as spacer to the wall behind.

When flying, I block two of the chair wheels with rubber wedges, so that it does not roll backwards when I press the rudder pedals.

One of them is seen on this picture:

Works absolutely fine here. :)

Btw., wasyl00 I really like your setup.

Just difficult to implement on my chair, because it does not have an flat underside.

Still considering what I will end up doing, but have some ideas.

+ 1 for the rubber wedges but you definitely need to lower you stick/throttle to more ergonomic level. Fly for hours in that position and you hands will die :)

Thanks, and I know. :)

That's the very reason I want to change my setup, both for throttle and stick.

What will you say when I tell you, I even got an extension for the stick? ;) :D

Plan is to move the stick in front of the chair, a bit lower, and the throttle to the side, in good height for my hand.

But, working on how to achieve it best, so it will take a while still.

I have replaced some of the casters on my sim chair with self locking ones, they roll freely with no weight on chair but lock when I sit down. Works great on tile floor.

I recently came up with a great solution for this problem. Ill show some pictures when i get home how i solved this.

First of all get some yoga or aerobic tiles. Great use as antislip mat.

And keeps the chair very well in place.

I removed all the wheels since applying pressure with feet on the rudder pedals would cause rolling backwards.

Went to a hardware store or building shop and got me some of these

Then i looked at what kind of flat knobs or foots would fit.

After installation it looks like this and works very well.

This helped me find the perfect solution for my needs. I hope this could help people look for such a solution in the future

Great solution, thanks for sharing. What about the rotation. Does you chair make these small rotations when applying rudder, or it doesn't annoy you?

My chair does not rotate when applying rudder. I use the MFG Crosswind rudder pedals and they are really smooth.

I see u use the saitek combat rudder pedals and you could set the spring tension lower if full rudder makes your chair rotate.

One question, how did you cut the metal? Did you do it yourself? Because if you use a metalsow the edges become very sharp. But yours look pretty smooth.

I had my plates laser cut from single 500 x 500 mm plate. All online ordered smooth and easy. Yes the edges were quite sharp and had to file and then sand them a little due to kids in the house. Otherwise I would leave them since they do not overhang beyond the seat. I also had to glue some fabric on a few edges as seen on pictures due to the same reason.

As I was putting all design together I realized I would make some small changes here and there. It's hard to nail the final design by the first time but I'm very happy as it is now.

Even though you've stopped the chair from rolling, does the rotation/swivel still stop you from getting good accuracy from pedals?

Yes the rotation is still there. I dropped the chair all the way down so the buttkicker clamp gives some resistance but as I said I need to design some kind of rotation lock which would be ideal.

Online? Okay..may i ask how much you paid for the cut plates all together? Cause i just bought the Warthog, and an extension (from you i guess ;) ), so there isn't to much budget left, unfortunately

I used lasermaster.co.uk. I paid £87 for everything including material (mild steel 4mm thick) and P&P. I sourced the rest bits and pieces from ebay.
