Mt5_Roie Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 So I'm thinking about using an old computer I have (Mac Mini) and putting window 8 or 10 on it and making it a dedicated server for my friends and me. But I have a couple questions. I know if it's on a local network only machine in that network will be able to see it. I would need to open the ports up for the external connections to see it, do you guys know the ports I need to open? Would it advisable to set up a communication server as well, like teamspeak on the same server - or would that cause too many issues? I'm thinking it would be used for about 2-5 people at any time. Not sure if teamspeak is the best option, or any other app.... Also thinking it would be nice to run a little wing website on the server as well. Is there a template out there for a virtual wing website? Not too savvy with HTMl so would need as much help I could get. I saw the post on the dsc wiki about disabling the 3d engine so I'm good on that. Anything else I should be thinking of? I do have a second DSC account for my laptop that I use for combined arms...so would either use that or buy another module under a new for the server. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
dabomb Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 Any PC that can run DCS can conceivably run a dedicated server. Now, how well that server will run depends on CPU, RAM and network bandwidth. The biggest limiting factor (and pain in the butt) with DCS is the GPU. Even if you're running a headless, dedicated server, it will still need a GPU capable of running DCS (a DX9 capable GPU for DCS 1.2.x or a DX11 capable GPU for running the 1.5 open beta). Can a Mac Mini run DCS?
Mt5_Roie Posted October 4, 2015 Author Posted October 4, 2015 Well a Mac Mini has an intel i7 running at 2.3 ghz. The gpu isn't anything too great since it's a Intel Hd Graphics 4000 with 1 gb of VRAM. It's my spare machine I used to use as a media server. So figured might as well convert it. I believe it's got 8 gigs or Ram, but I can bump that up if needed. I have a Macbook Pro that has similar specs, and I have it dual booted with Windows 8 and it can run DCS 1.5 Open Beta. I pretty much use it for combined arms to laser up some targets. So in theory it is possible. Any suggestions about communication and website? I have a 75/75 network connection at home and the server will be hardwired on a gigabyte ethernet connection. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester

Revelation Posted October 4, 2015 Posted October 4, 2015 When will the real dedicated server come out? That is in the works, we just need to be a little more patient. Win 10 Pro 64Bit | 49" UWHD AOC 5120x1440p | AMD 5900x | 64Gb DDR4 | RX 6900XT
