I am struggling to use that cannon on tanks. I need to be very close, but is it effective? Any technique monsters holler in!

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Aim for the rear/top of the vehicles. To simply put it the A and T frog's cannon aren't effective against most MBTs (Leo 2, M1s, T-80, T-90). I have seen them work alright against Leo 1s, M60s, and T-55s but you're much better off using rockets/laser guided missiles/iron bombs on them. If those aren't an option then RTB and re-arm. Until damage modeling can be improved to include mobility (track, drive wheels) kills and mission (gun, optics) kills you're much better off saving the gun for lighter vehicles like trucks/IFVs/APCs.

My Specs:

Win 10 Pro 64bit/ i7 6770K 4.5Ghz/32GB DDR4/ GTX 1070 SC/Samsung SSD

Warthog Stick/TWCS Throttle/TrackIR 5

Forget the idea to kill MBT with 30mm, also don't try do the same with light armors. Just use 30mm against infantry and trucks. If the truck have an AAA, then abort the attack. Is simple not recommended put in risk the aircraft like that.

Actually the MBT turn the turret toward you making even more difficult to hit soft MBT parts. I don't like how the MBT react against fixed wings in game. I don't believe this gone happen in RL.

Don't even bother to use 30mm againts infantry, since it's loaded only with AP rounds... (at least in DCS world)

I have succesfully killed MBT's with the cannon.

You need to dive and aim for top of the hull, then it works.

But it's not an easy task.:smilewink:

DCS does not model Armor thickness it uses hitpoints. It does not care where you hit something. If you want to care about armor thickness and attack angles you need to play Warthunder free to play MMO. Magically a Free2play game can do where DCS fails. Edited by Beagle One

It definately cares where you hit.

I just tested it by shooting two t-55 tanks with bmp-2, 30mm cannon.

The first tank i shooted to the back side of the hull and it took about 40 ap rounds to destroy it.

To the second one, i aimed to the front of the hull and it took all the ammo.

The "health bar" didn't even lower.

So in DCS there is a very simplified "damage/hit area"- model, but nothing like in etc. "steel beast's pro" simulator.

Yes, DCS is not in tanks realistic direction, at least till now. Steel armor: Blaze of war, in steam is a very realistic tanks sim. Everything about damage have to do with where you hit the tank. And the best of this part in this heavy simulation, is the part when you still continue shooting to the tank without know the crew already died because a badly hit penetrated the armor.

Of course DCS does, why you'd even bring WT into a simulator discussion I don't know.

As for killing tanks with the 30mm, anything below a T-72 is fair game from behind and above. M1A2 etc. don't even bother.
