moggel Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Hi everyone, I'm in the progress of learning to fly the A-10C. I was going through the training videos but couldn't get past the section about how to set up a SPI. According to the videos, and what I've seen in other places, the SPI should be set by long-pressing the TMS up key, or L.Ctrl-UP. Neither works. What happens is that the left MFD goes black for half a second but I've seen no other effects. I assume this is me misunderstanding something, since a search for the issue here at the forums came with nothing. Can anyone please spare a few seconds straightening out this noob? :helpsmilie: Cheers i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz; 16Gb DDR3; GeForce GTX 1070; Windows 10; TM Warthog HOTAS
BaconSarnie Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 You are making sure that whatever you're trying to make the SPI with is Sensor Of Interest? QuiGon Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) What sensor do you try to become the SPI? For example, if you want the TGP to become your SPI you need to make it your SOI first (usally by pressing Coolie Hat Right long) and then press TMS up to make it the SPI as well. moggel Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 You are making sure that whatever you're trying to make the SPI with is Sensor Of Interest? I was using the HUD in this case. I slewed little marker to someplace on the ground and tried L.Ctrl+UP (and also TMS-UP long command) but nothing. No marker on the HUD or the TAD. The instruction video never progressed from that point either so I took that as an indication it didn't work. Is there something else I need to do? Are the commands different depending on the SOI? i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz; 16Gb DDR3; GeForce GTX 1070; Windows 10; TM Warthog HOTAS
BaconSarnie Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) As long as the HUD is SOI then TMS up long will create a SPI where ever you placed the marker. But if its not SOI it wont work Coolie switch up to make HUD SOI, slew the marker to desired point, TMS up long to create SPI. That should do it... Check your NAV is configured (EAC, EGI, etc), it should be OK on a training mission. Check HUD SOI ("*") Slew, LCtr+down, LCtrl+up long. You can't lock something not on ground (must look down). You should then get the SPI marker (with line) and "TDC" should be displayed at the bottom of HUD (I didn't see it with default view angle). And the "wedding cake" on TAD... Quick note on wording, the TGP can be SOI and SPI generator. The TGP (or any other sensor) is not the SPI itself :smartass:
moggel Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 That should do it... Check your NAV is configured (EAC, EGI, etc), it should be OK on a training mission. It was the A-10C navigation training mission so the nav config should be the default (EGI, I think). Check HUD SOI ("*") Slew, LCtr+down, LCtrl+up long. You can't lock something not on ground (must look down). Are you saying I can't just put the marker (in HUD or TAD) somewhere in the terrain, such as the bend of a river or a crossroads, and make that a SPI? Do I need to point at a building or a vehicle or something like that? i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz; 16Gb DDR3; GeForce GTX 1070; Windows 10; TM Warthog HOTAS
BaconSarnie Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 No, you can put it anywhere on the ground, a tree, a blade of grass, anything even a blank area And lo, Reverend Vegas did say "Take forth unto the infidel the mighty GAU 8 and expend its holy 30MM so that freedom will be brung upon them who knoweth not the joys of BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT" "Amen"
RoboPhred Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 You might be hitting the range of the HUD SPI marker. When slewing the marker on the HUD, it will show an X through the square if it cannot resolve the target the marker is over, which mostly is due to range. Try setting the marker down, so it covers something closer to the aircraft. 2

Try setting the marker down, so it covers something closer to the aircraft. This is probably the problem. Sometimes the very bottom of the HUD will still not be close enough and you may need to be slightly nose down to get the cursor close enough. 476th vFighter Group Main Page -- YouTube -- Discord Scaley AV YouTube - More videos from the 476th

I only wanted to highlight that you can lock anything you want, except if it's above you (or too far, I forgot to mention it) Hope you'll find the problem, maybe you can share a track (or a screenshot if track doesn't work)? It's usually a very good way to get things sorted.
