I just bought the F-86F and I have a question. I'm playing the "Ground attack" instant action mission and when I put the function selector on "Rockets" the sight becomes permanently caged. Only when I switch the selector to "Guns" does the pipper become uncaged. This behaviour is not how it's described in the manual (it says the pipper should float as long as the electrical cage is not activated). Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug?

Maybe it should move a little, after all real manual says the electrical caging should be used before the dive to stabilize the pipper. However, the whole idea of gunsight operation in "rockets" mode is based on having the pipper fixed at preselected depression angle (18 mils by default for 5" rockets if I recall correctly), so obviously it cannot float as much as in A-A gyro mode.

 

The same will apply to bombing in MPC (manual pipper control) mode You will probably learn next.

Not sure if it still works like this these days. When it first came out this method was so unreliable that you may as well just closed your eyes and fired. As far as I know, most people I have talked to just leave it caged and use it like the Mustang. It's more accurate that way.

They may have changed it in 1.5 but I'm use to using it caged now and it works fine for me.

Nah, it was quite accurate back then as long as You changed pipper depression angle to ~30 mils for shallow dives. Which the guy on the vid didn't do and as we see all rockets were falling short. No wonder he couldn't hit much.

 

But looks like BST has changed something in 1.5 and now the histoirically correct setting of 17-18 mils works well.

Tried to learn the f86 today. Rocket accuracy still seem strange - falling short like in the video above. Seems depression angle needs to be quite high to keep on target.

 

Am I right in assuming depression angle should be set to the AOA for the run?

So far as I and many others who posted similar vids on Ebay who set the angle to all different settings to get it to work correctly (myself included), the thing just didn't work well. Then people started posting vids of using the fixed sight and getting good results because they had a solid reference as to there the rocket would actually go. And again, everything here is subject to the poster's personal opinion and experience.

 

And I agree that they did change something in the trajectory because it changed after the update. Also in the Mustang. It took a few tries but I got use to it pretty quickly.

Some guys in YouTube vids were going all the way up to 50 on angle, even if they were diving shallow to get it to work for them. Like I said, I have never had luck with it and find it quite effective set as a fixed sight.

Using the bomb sight the way they tell you to is pretty silly too IMO. Again....better as a fixed sight. I remember forum threads where people were asking about it early on and everyone just kept telling them that the system itself was just not accurate. Whether this was true in reality, I cannot say. I'm just conveying what was always talked about on the forums. :huh:
