ZQuickSilverZ Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 What do you guys think about having a product to provide aftermarket GPS to vehicles that don't have a moving map system. I am sure in real life people flying these birds TODAY use aftermarket GPS. The product could allow for server settings to disable it to enforce "period correct" capability. Any thoughts? I need, I need, I need... What about my wants? QuickSilver original. "Off with his job" Mr Burns on the Simpsons. Rangi Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Sounds like a good idea. PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.
Stoops417 Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I'd use a tool like that in the UH-1 for sure.
jcbak Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 It seems like a good idea but are pilots really buying aftermarket GPS units for military aircraft or are you referring to privately owned military aircraft that have been long retired? ZQuickSilverZ Posted December 4, 2015 Author Posted December 4, 2015 It seems like a good idea but are pilots really buying aftermarket GPS units for military aircraft or are you referring to privately owned military aircraft that have been long retired? Well first let me say this. Some of the airframes we are playing are early versions that have had a LOT of upgrades over the years. There is also the fact we are playing airframes from different eras. GPS might help level the playing field so to speak. I don't pretend to know what they stick in these upgraded airframes but I do know that GPS is EXTREMELY useful. It is not unheard of for military people to use "after market" products in war. As an example during the Iraq war some American families were sending "after market" body armor to the soldiers. Would a real life military pilot flying an older airframe with a non moving map system use GPS? I don't know. I only know I would find it very useful and it would add a lot to the playability. I imagine a real life pilot could really benefit as well. Reasons like you brought up (though not the specific one you brought up) is the reason I suggested implementing a "server disable". PiedDroit Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Good idea. A possible implementation would be a map viewport showing the F10 map (kind of "minimap"). That could be disabled in mission options.

I don't know who bought it, the pilot or the Russian AF, but check this vid (start at 1:10) ;) Find The Links To All My Mods And Liveries Here (in the gallery)
Dachs Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) RDAF Lynx helo's fly with a Garmin aviation gps unit mounted on the glareshield. Youtube link, where you can catch a glimpse of the GPS in the Lynx. [ame] [/ame] Also, I got a lift one time with a AN12, those guys used a standard handheld gps, velcroed to the dash. It looked a bit.. dubious, but hey, we ended up in the right place :) They also had a jury rigged altimeter showing feet, next to their standard metric one, made it easierfir them when flying in the west. lanmancz Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Even something like this might be nice. I use this while flying with Xplane. It just takes the position, altitude, heading and velocity data from Xplane (there is export over network option) and displays it over google earth map on my nexus7 tablet. Pretty neat. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.meerkatlab.xmap&hl=cs [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Elite, Intel i9 9900K, Fractal Design Kelvin S36, Zotac GTX 1070 8GB AMP Extreme, 32GB DDR4 HyperX CL15 Predator Series @ 3000 MHz, Kingston SSD 240GB (OS), Samsung 970 EVO 1TB M.2 NVMe (sim), Fractal Design Define R5 Black Window, EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2, Win 10 Home x64, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals, Thrustmaster MFD Cougar Pack, TrackIR (DelanClip), 3x 27" BenQ EW2740L, Oculus Rift S
Sweep Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 That would be AWESOME as a server setting...maybe make it sorta like the kneeboard (2D popup window at first, maybe a 3D model later?). Lord of Salt
ZQuickSilverZ Posted December 11, 2015 Author Posted December 11, 2015 So how about it ED? Is this something that can be done? I would buy it. I need, I need, I need... What about my wants?
