I am very very new to DCS, as in I have had the tf51 off the ground twice now!! My track IR should be arriving tomorrow and i am looking forward to putting in many more hours. I am trying to find out which controls are the important ones to map to my t flight hotas x. Im assuming the trim controls would be a good start, but any help from the experienced simmers out there would be greatly appreciated.

can you map the pitch control to a button (as opposed to a slider) so that it will adjust incrementally? My stick only has 1 slider and that will be for the throttle.

So used the T-Flight Hotas for ages, great stick for the money. Personally I mapped the Hat Up+Down to elevator trim, Hat Left+Right to rudder trim (used head tracking so didn't need it for views). Also mapped buttons for flaps up + down, and the Comms menu. Zoom in slow and zoom out slow, fire guns on trigger and weapon release on 'second button'. Those were the main controls I used a lot, others I mostly left to keyboard.

Hi,

You can use the default "MODIFIERS" (LAlt, LCtrl, ... )

or

add joystick-buttons as "MODIFIERS"

to combine them with the rest of the joystick-buttons or the POV for joystick-mapping of keyboard-commands

POV 1 up ......... standard - look up

POV 1 down ......... standard - look down

in combination with a "MODIFIERS" - e.g. for your pitch control (if you want not to use PageUp/PageDown on the keyboard)

POV 1 up + LAlt ......... "PageUp" Engine RPM Increase

POV 1 down + LAlt ......... "PageDown" Engine RPM Decrease

POV 1 up + JOY BTN 3 ......... "PageUp" Engine RPM Increase

POV 1 down + JOY BTN 3 ......... "PageDown" Engine RPM Decrease

important controls to map?

Also try modifying the curve and deadzone in the 'Axis Tune' section at the bottom of the controls menu. Most people seem to prefer a small deadzone (5-10) and a modest curve (around 10-15). But it's a personal thing. Once you set up the buttons you need (flaps, gear, etc) try a flight with differing values for the above and see how it 'feels' to you.

Trim is important guys

Also, 2 functions to map: IFF on/off so when you enter in dogfight you can switch it on the fly. Second: knee board. Third also a radio button

i'd avoid deadzones. I don't find them useful at all.

Thanks everyone for all the replies!! I'm having some trouble mapping the trim controls to the hat switch. When I go to add a control nothing happens when I hit the hat switch. I even went into the view controls and cleared the hat controls there. Still no luck. Any suggestions? Also what is "iff" ? I know.....noob question

Hi,

The SCR-695-A IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) Radio is not operational in DCS: P-51D Mustang

Manual page 97/98

I guess @VrValor mixed it up with the AN/APS-13 Rear Warning Radar (?)

Which trim controls ?

Sorry my bad. Yes I mean the rear warning. Trim left right rudder, up and down pitch.

Flashben, why? Aren't radiator controls just a on /off switch?

I'll give you a smart tip to set flaps: set it on the joystick: during dogfights you will change it on the fly. Raise it to 1 or 2 during turns and you will turn faster.

Hi Waterboy31,

when I just read your first post I had to smile, thinking back to when I started out with the DCS P-51D and got my TrackIR almost a year ago :)

I had to wait a while to get a good stick--Logitech Extreme Pro just isn't that great--, because I needed rudder peddles to use with a Thrustmaster HOTAS and I was waiting on Slaw Device to take up production again.

From experience, for RPM control there are only two settings that I ever use, 3000 RPM and 2700 RPM. So this could easily be set to two keyboard keys and you should practically never have an issue with not having it on your HOTAS.

Trim I have found is really only interesting when flying long distances and I have it set to my Hat. I actually don't even use the 6% right rudder setting on take off anymore, I just compensate with the rudder.

I also use curves (Axis Tune) for all axes settings: Saturation X = 100, Saturation Y = 75, and Curvature = 25.

With these settings, you cannot put any of the control surfaces to 100% of their possible, but that is also part of the solution. I read a conversation of somebody with an actual WWII P-51D pilot, who stated that you never actually never pushed the controls to any one extreme. It would be like driving down the freeway at 150 MPH and suddenly throwing the wheel over as far as it would go. Nothing good could ever come of it

The 25 curvature gives you more fidelity in control, which is always a good thing, while still allowing more than enough control for agile maneuvering :joystick:

Happy landings :pilotfly:

BTW IFF is not actually an active radio sender. It's a transponder. When it receives a specifically coded signal at the correct frequency it will reply with it's own signal, which identifies it as "Friend". Otherwise it is silent.

Absolutely not :P. Instead of trying to explain exactly how it works, like a picture is worth a 1000 words, so is a demonstration.

Start a mission in which you start from the ramp with everything turned off. Per default water and oil radiator outlet doors are closed all the way--to keep weasels out :D. As soon as you turn the battery on you hear the whirring sound of both servos opening the doors. This is because with the switch protectors closed, the switches are forced into the Automatic position. So open the switch protectors and flick both switches down to the Off position.

Now turn the battery on and push one of the radiator switches forward to Open for a second or two before releasing it to spring back to Off. As soon as you release the switch the door movement stops. Now push backwards to Close. The door servo whirs for exactly as long as you opened it until the door is completely closed stops moving.

This demonstrates that the switches control moving the doors, but only for as long as they are held

Some say that with the doors closed there is less resistance and use it in combat to have an ever so slight speed advantage. How they manage to not let the engine overheat then I have no idea.

I myself am just trying not to stall in a curves while trying to get away from the guy behind me
