I love the idea of being able to actually "train" in NTTR, however, the training options available online are usually super limited for the constant interruption due to actually being shot down, having to spawn again, finding your way back, trying to re-engage, etc. Imagine this was the case during real Red Flag engagements. Nobody would get anything done.

My wish for ED to capitalize on the training aspect of NTTR is the following:

  • The idea is to do mock combat that focuses on tactics and engagement, rather than falling out of the sky - just like real Red Flag training would provide. It should allow for being "tagged" (killed), but then staying airborne and going for another round of mock combat to really learn something from it without the frustration of being shut down. The only limiting factor for staying in the air would be the amount of fuel on board.

  • For that mock combat to work, a module (loadable from the Rearming and Refueling menu) has to exist that replaces the bullets and missiles with sensors that would tell the shooter (and the "victim") whether the simulated shot was a hit or a miss. Needless to say, all cockpit indications for the shooter would have to work (e.g. "got tone"), and all the warnings for the "victim" (e.g., being locked, launch warnings) as well. The one being tagged could thus emit some smoke for a few seconds to visualize the kill for the shooter. Pilots could then reorganize while still in the air, and go for it again.

  • All other limitations during flight would need to be in effect as well (structural damage, etc), so simply turning on "Invincibility" from the settings menu wouldn't cut it!

To me, this idea would be a no-brainer given the nature of NTTR, and I would love to see such option included.

Your thoughts?

I'm 100% with you and think that all these things will add an immersion boost for the NTTR, but if I remember well Wags said that they aren't going to do a simulation of a simulation, so probably they aren't going to invest resources in that topic.. :(

You can create the same thing by placing an enemy vehicle on the map and selecting the advanced option as WEAPONS HOLD within the OPTIONS/ROE commands? That way you could shoot tanks as target practice without them shooting back at you. You could use the health bar meters as sensors on the F10 map to determine damage done after each run and even trigger a text message to appear when a vehicle was destroyed.

In that vein....I had designed a mission that focused on evading Manpads. All client aircraft were immortal.....you knew if you sustained a hit or not. It actually worked pretty well. I bring this up because you always have the "immortal" option for training. I would NEVER use it for anything else.
