Something has changed in P-51 engine modelling a couple of months ago and the old auto start script is unable to deal with these changes, failing most of the time. Turn on the battery and crank the engine for a few seconds before activating the auto start. That should do the trick.

I would still recommend learning to do the startup manually, though, as it's MUCH faster than the auto script.

And very simple, really. Battery -> fuel tank -> fuel pump -> ignition switch -> ram-air -> primer for 5-10 seconds, -> RPM to max -> crank until it fires -> carb from cutoff to run.

Asking for ground power makes start-up fool proof. Sometimes the battery seems low on juice.

There's really no reason to use the auto start on any of the WWII aircraft. Take five min to learn how to start it and lose the auto start crutch.

Counting blades refers to turning the to propeller--and consequently the engine--so that 6 propeller blades pass the upright position.

Turning the engine without power insures that the bearings in the engine are all lubricated before power is applied.

To do this, leave the ignition off while engaging the starter and count the blades that pass the upright position.

Once you have counted 6 blades, engage the ignition to "Both" and start priming until the engine starts.

As soon as the engine is firing, release the primer and switch the fuel mixture to Run.

Once the engine is running smoothly, check that your RPM's are not above 15k. I generally set RPM to 12k.

Wait until your oil temperature has reached 40° and then you can start taxiing.

Of course, in emergency situations, you can throw caution to the wind and just head to the runway--or any level surface --once the engine has started ;)
