Zeke Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Great mission to get things started. While on CAP we were cleared to fire on low flying aircraft to our west. Locked up two and fired two 120's, cleared wingman to fire. Didn't see any hits and tried to reacquire the targets to no avail. We decided to go back on CAP and stayed there until our relief flight showed up. Landed back at Nellis, only to have an F16 taxi right in front of us at the end of the runway! Turned hard and just missed him. Whew! Taxied and stopped. Mission Success!! While on CAP we made sure to keep out eyes on the enemy CAP to our west, they never moved toward us, so we didn't engage them. One thing I did to make sure we didn't cross the FEBA was to keep a close eye on our WP miles from WP3. Once we were about 6 miles west of WP3 we turned back to the east. Questions: How do we know what KIAS airspeed is on these jets? Also, what's a good rule of thumb for altitude at the WP right before final? Had a blast, can't wait to fly MSN 02.
REDEYE_CVW-66 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 KIAS= Indicated airspeed- that is the speed shown on your hud (as opposed to ground speed) As for landing altitude- I think the brief said ground level + 1000 feet. (Remember that Nellis is quite a bit above sea level, which is what your altimiter is showing)
Steve Davies Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Thanks for the debrief, Zeke! KIAS is what the HUD shows in the DCS, IIRC. I always come down the Sally Corridor at 15k MSL, then commence a descending turn to the initial fix, aiming to reach it at about 4.5k MSL. It's a ten mile final from there, or you can fly up initial and pitchout to land. Steve Davies https://www.10percenttrue.com
Zeke Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 Thanks Steve, Love the briefs, really makes the campaign fun! I thought KIAS was what the HUD showed, but in order to stay at 420 KIAS at 27,000 it seemed to me I needed to be in burner a lot. I stayed below that to conserve fuel. Both my wingnut and I made it back with plenty of Gas.

Zeke Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 I'll keep an eye on the Mach numbers instead on the next mission. Thanks!

Rabso Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Guys what is the best practice of knowing my location against the FEBA without pressing F10? Is there any bearing/range of any SP to FEBA? maybe a certain safe range from SP3? i7-6700K | MSI Z170A Gaming M7 | Dominator 32GB 3000MHz | MSI GTX 1070 GAMING Z | 2TB SSD & 1TB HDD | Acer H277HU 27" WQHD | Audeze Mobius | TM Warthog | MFG Crosswind | TrackIR 5 | Windows 10 Pro
Blackeye Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) Guys what is the best practice of knowing my location against the FEBA without pressing F10? Is there any bearing/range of any SP to FEBA? maybe a certain safe range from SP3? Well you could try to memorize the landmarks surrounding the FEBA. Alternatively measure the minimum distance between FEBA and steer point 4. Then set SP4 as current and make sure you never exceed that range. SP4 because it's far away and a circle around it somewhat matches the FEBA. SP3 should work too, but it will be more restrictive because the radius is smaller, it will however also prevent you from flying over the container. Edited January 19, 2016 by Blackeye
Steve Davies Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 SP3 is about 20 miles east of the FEBA. So, you have to keep an eye on your DME on the HSI - if you have SP3 selected and are west of it (the pointer arrow will tell you which direction it lies relative to you), you don't want to see a figure greater than, say, 10 miles. The reality with the Eagle in DCS is that, with no moving map display, data link or steerpoint indicators in the HUD or radar scope, you have to pay extra special attention to mission planning (use the measure tool in the mission planning screen) and to your HSI once airborne. It's old school! Steve Davies https://www.10percenttrue.com

HSI is something easy for me and I can fly fully without SP base on VOR, NDB .. StandingCow Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I used my steer points FYI. And the map. I am useless at using visual landmarks, trying to learn them though. 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo
