maybe i'm alone out here, but this is probably one of the most egregious problems currently with the sim, but especially with the KA-50 (A10, kind of..) pretty much any sort of heli or low-flying aircraft is almost helpless against iron-sighted triple-A guns unless they have standoff capability; it's even worse when it feels like the shilka is actually less-threatening than an insurgent ZU-23; at least the shilka gives you a RWR spike.

 

as it is many missions are crawling with these nigh-invisible man-with-no-name crewed monsters who seem to put full bursts on target with absolutely no care about how far you are away, how fast you are moving, how low to the ground you are, or how bad the weather is. in fact, it seems to me that they are "perfectly accurate" in that the only thing that can cause them to miss is the inaccuracy of the gun; the operator never misses.

 

this is a huge problem in general both because it turns every APC into a shilka, which makes designing missions where rockets and guns (besides GAU-8) are even a factor impossible, which ruins a lot of the fun of flying an attack helicopter, being always stuck at maximum vikhr range.

 

it gets even worse when they start hiding them in treelines, considering they are almost invisible.

 

tl;dr the current modeling of AA gunnery is incredibly basic, which seems bad because it's a factor in nearly every mission flown by a ground-attack platform. please make it less accurate according to the era and capability of the actual shooting platform.

 

so, for instance the BMP-3 should retain it's extremely nasty accuracy, but a BMP-1 or BTR-80 should lose quite a bit. ideally, the shilka and BMP-3 should be very deadly and the other vehicles should lose quite a bit of accuracy at AA gunnery.

 

i make this plea both because i have been shot down many times by an insurgent volunteer at the maximum range of his zu-23, sitting on a hill, while running near VNE, while in inclement weather, while flying directly sideways, and had the vast majority of his burst impact my aircraft, and also because it really stretches credulity when some non-radar non-laserguided platform takes this ridiculous 4-second perfect lead, and also because it obsoletes most of the weapons i like to use, like dumb bombs and unguided rockets.

I concur. Especially APCs and infantry should be way less accurate. It's not right that grunts with AKs can consistently hit me when I'm passing them a few hundred meters away at 200kph.

I concur wholeheartedly. I just got shot down while at 5000ft AGL by small arms... I'm talking AKs and PKMs. Wholly unrealistic.

 

And I have some knowledge on this. As a real life military helicopter pilot, we consider SMARMS (small arms) to no longer be effective above 1200ft - above that, the tracers have burned out and it becomes nearly impossible to aim. The round may still have enough energy to do damage, but the operator can't hit anything as he loses his tracer.

 

And as a former infantryman as well, I know that it is extremely difficult to hit something that is moving when you have no frame of reference behind it - sure, you can lead, but it's really tough to see if your rounds are getting close, as there's nothing behind for your splash to hit and give you an idea where you are actually hitting. This applies primarily when shooting at something in the sky (nothing behind but blue sky)

I concur entirely, I believe air defence, specifically guns wise needs some improving upon, but it's a huge workload for ED, I'm sure though it will come... one day
