mota67 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hi everyone, My actual config is : MB : Asus P8Z77-V LX CPU : Intel® Core i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz Mem : 2x 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 GSkill GPU : Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Vapor X 2GB HD : Intel SSD 330 Series 180Go PS : Cooler Master Silent Pro M - 600W OS : Windows 10 64bit Display : Iiyama ProLiteXB2380HS (FHD) or Oculus Rift DK2 (SDK 0.8) I wanted to see which one between CPU or GPU is a bottleneck (I expected it to be the CPU) So I played a .trk file and monitored CPU and GPU loads Surprisingly, when running on FHD monitor, GPU load is 100% full time and CPU doesn't go above 50% (except for 1 core only at 60%) even when flying above cities where FPS drops down. But what is most weird is when I played the same .trk file using the Rift : GPU won't go above 70% and CPU, just like before, not above 50% ! While FPS are most of the time under 50FPS (which is not enough for playing with the Rift..) Am I missing something here ? Drivers are up to date, Vsync off, power managmt option set to "High perf"
blkspade Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Well the CPU is always a bottleneck in Sims, but the reason it doesn't get loaded is the sim can only make use of 2 cores. One of which is for audio work. I don't have any first hand experience with the rift, but either a sim bug is limiting performance with the Rift or the CPU can't keep up. If the dual rendering is handled like the mirrors where object counts go up where they are turned on, then that definitely weighs on that CPU single core perfomance. http://104thphoenix.com/
mota67 Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 Thanks for the quick reply blkspade, So let say I upgrade my rig with a new processor. Will it improve my FPS even if the actual one isn't fully loaded ? As for the Rift, tiborrr made a great thread (http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=157374) where he found a weird behavior when simulating a VR resolution. Must be a sim bug...
blkspade Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Well for games that are CPU limited and not very MT capable, IPC (instructions per clock) is king. So a new CPU is likely going to have higher IPC, a higher clock, or both. If you could get a decent overclock from your non-K i5, that would be beneficial, but unlikely. Technically both your CPU and GPU are below spec for the Rift, well the CV1, but the only real difference is resolution with respect to the PC parts. http://104thphoenix.com/
Jinker Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Just for your info (no rift in these tests): http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=159284 High jinks!

NeilWillis Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Take a look at the requirements specified for the Oculus Rift release version. There is always going to be a bottleneck somewhere, and your i5 chip is getting a little long in the tooth by now. I have an i7 5770 CPU and the compatibility check says even that isn't up to the task!
BitMaster Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Whatever CPU you get, none is fast enough out-of-the-box ! You should consider overclocking past 4GHz towards 5GHz to somehow have it fluent at high fps. Hadwell Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) Whatever CPU you get, none is fast enough out-of-the-box ! You should consider overclocking past 4GHz towards 5GHz to somehow have it fluent at high fps. non-K intel cpus don't overclock, best example i could think of is the i7 2600k and 2700k, the difference between them is like 200mhz at stock, but they will both overclock to somewhere near 5ghz, though it's pure luck if you get one that'll go to 5ghz stable... the worst 2600ks still achieve 4.6ghz no problem, stock 3.4... the most you might get with a 2600 non-k is 3.8ghz... maybe... OldE24 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 it sounds to me your issues with rift, you talk about CPU and GPU but where is your ram?? MAXXED OUT i bet 8GB is min and the 2gb vram i belive from reading with the rift and such is not enough.
