Hey folks,

what I'm asking you is how you guys when you are flying the f-15 or any other fighter aircraft manage to stay with your buddy or keep the situational awareness in terms of where your buddy is during an engagement such as a 2vs2.

My friend and I have flown together since the start Rise of Flight continuing with Clod and BoS. In theese eras we never had problems staying close to help each other out or at least know what the approximate positions of ourselves are.

Here comes the problem:

Since dogfights/engagements in modern Fighters tend to happen at higher speeds and thanks to the weapons longer distances aswell we often find ourselves 40 if not more miles away from each other with no chance of support. :joystick:

What do you guys do to keep track of your friends position and the situation it's self?

Any methods, advice, links to Youtube videos are highly appreciated!

Salute,

It's all in the bullseye. Compare your own reference to it with the one from your wingman. You then should be able to draw an imaginary picture which gives you a chance to match course (one of you flying 180, the other one 270 for example). Then try to match altitude and once you think you are close one should Pop a flare to odentify visually.

If you or your wingman extends call out to where he is extending. So if you have to extend you know witch general direction to fly to. If you turn back in tell him as well. If you reacquire the enemy tell him witch heading.

This is just a "stupid simple" explanation. There is way more to it. I have not mastered this myself. I'm not even close. With only one wingman can manage. But with 3 or 4 it gets even more difficult. Everybody has to listen to what the other say's and react appropriate on it. Don't go off engaging another guy if your wingman is in trouble.

Everything within 20 miles is a high priority target. If to much enter. You both run. If your wingman has a good position and he is about to shoot him cover his surroundings by searching with your radar and visual. If visual is possible. If somebody comes in to kill your friend you can fire of a defensive shot or a kill shot. Depends on how close.

Go in close, and when you think you are too close, go in closer.

Find some visual reference points, get in contrails.

Find things on radar to call your range/bearing from, too.

Also, as mentioned, use your position from a steerpoint (or bulls, with your navigation system or F10 map) to rejoin.

If you're on a server with the F10 map, try using the MGRS grids, they are very helpful!

All good stuff about relative position to bullseye. You can also use your position on the grid provided by the kneeboard. The grid is sectioned off in 100 km squares with letters for each square. Then it's easy to say where you are positioned in the grid square.

Grid reference is an easy quick way to have situation awareness regarding location.

as you get more proficient with operating the radar, you will get a clearer and more complete picture of who is all around you. coupled with the necessary notices over comms and you will get a fairly good idea who is who and where.

The who is who and the radar isn't the problem. We can find eachother aswell after a relatively short time. What I'm asking for is advice on how not to seperate too much in an engagement including at least 2 bandits breaking in different directions in the first place...

One of you should act as flight lead and the other as a wingman. It sounds like you're both free lancing and doing whatever you want. One should be primary and the other should hang around watching and acting as cover. It really just comes done to situational awareness and you guys just need to work on it.
