Beg to differ

my manual refers to this option under 'external view control'.

plus there is an F2 shot (of weapons) in some of the training tracks that can only be made by moving the camera left/right

That's done by unlocking the camera position (SHIFT-ESC) moving the view to where you want it and locking it again with tha same key combo.

I said this in a previous thread, not sure if it will help you but its a quick guide to camera tricks

shift-j will just have that jiggle effect. It's just one of several clever camera tricks you could use. For example the F2 external view, you can do a different type of zoom with ctrl / or *. You can also use free cam F11. You can padlock it with the . from the numpad key. One of the main things you saw though in lock on movies is the use of the F4 view, this is pretty hard to master because it requires you to change the code in one of the files. But it can be achieved through LOCFG, it shows the plan and basically you just place it anywhere around it and move on that axis. You can place this camera anywhere on the plane, in the front, under a pylon, above...etc. Another trick you can use is in the F2 view, you can circle around the plane, then use shift-esc to unlock the plane so you can look around from that axis. It's pretty complex, hope you get it.

ctrl-(numpad 1-9) sequence of keys

i personally never saw that or used that before, maybe it was for quick snap in the cockpit. Does it say what was it used for in the quick start manual?
