MrGreezy Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Just trying to be a better Mirage pilot. Love it so far, but I'm still new to modern fighters as I'm still stuck with my wwii warbird brain. What are the tones/visual indications of the following? If my plane is being either tracked or locked? If I'm locked, is there a way to tell where I'm being locked from? When a missile is being shot? If that missile is either radar or heat-seeking or whatever else? I've got an idea about some of these but wanted to consult The Elder Gods of the forum.
Sryan Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 quick clarification: locking and tracking mean the same thing. The difference you probably meant is between being scanned and being tracked. The MiG-29 in the middle has no circle around it, he is merely scanning me. He sees me on his radar display but he has no lock. The two outboard MiGs are tracking me. They have a circle around them and could fire a radar guided missile at me at any time. When an aircraft is locking you the RWR produces a continual buzzing sound. Right now I believe there are no cues for when a missile is being launched against you. You can easily tell where the signal is coming from. Reference to the "clock" indications around the display. hope this helps. Check my F-15C guide
MrGreezy Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Actually yeah, that helps a ton. Thanks very much, sir
MrGreezy Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 There's one tone I'll get that I really don't know what it is. Hard to write out the sound. It's high pitched. Nothing to do with maneuvering, but then again I couldn't say for sure. So yeah, that narrows it down...There's a sound the plane makes and I don't know why.
MrGreezy Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Here's another one. If you lock them up once on your radar will they get warned that you have locks on them? Or will it come up as you are scanning them? I'm referring to when you have to lock someone up twice fire your medium-range missiles.
Sryan Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 (edited) next time it happens, and the mission ends. Press the SAVE TRACK key. find the file and it upload it here so we can take a look. I think it could be: -Magic II Tone: -RWR threat detect: -Airspeed warning is it any of these? Edited April 1, 2016 by Sryan Check my F-15C guide

It's probably the launch warning that you only get with AMRAAM's, even then it only happens some of the time. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
mattebubben Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Here's another one. If you lock them up once on your radar will they get warned that you have locks on them? Or will it come up as you are scanning them? I'm referring to when you have to lock someone up twice fire your medium-range missiles. First is TWS so no lock warning (but you cant fire your radar guided missile) Its only on the Second click STT that they will get a lock warning. (And you need STT to guide the Radar guided missile)
jojo Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 (edited) @ MrGreezy It's pretty obvious, but since you say you're coming from warbirds, I dare to point it to you. You radar cover 120° horizontally. Around your RWR the white marks are 30° apart. So RWR contacts within 2 marks on each side are potentially inside your radar scan volume. So you can try to detect them too, get their range and react accordingly. Try to correlate RWR and radar contacts. Even when we will get the missile launch warning, reacting to it might be too late. It's better to estimate their effective missile range depending on altitude, and react accordingly. Defensive reaction: - still above hostile missile's range = cranck : 50° offset to get them on radar but reduce closure rate = gain time - close or within hostile's missile range = pump : 180° U-turn on burner and get out of here. - missile fired at you and too close to pump effectively = survival notch : dive & turn hard to put radar emitter 90° off you (3 / 9 o'clock on RWR). So in look down hostile radar or active missile may loose lock. You may loose RWR contact during the maneuver, take a glance at HSI to estimate out of turn heading. The wings level and correct to keep RWR threat symbol on 90° line. Edited April 1, 2016 by jojo Mirage fanatic !
