Crunchy Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 (edited) I haven't had chance to play DCS lately, but after some patching it appears that my 53OD missile is acting like i'm using the Magic missile on my HUD? I keep getting two circular rings and the message TiR instead of getting the circle in the square when you lock with the 53OD missile? Is this a known bug or what could it be? I think this is how its supposed to work. TIR is simply the Launch Cue. (im not french but my understanding is that TIR is short for Tirer which i think means shoot in french) And the change to the circle instead of the square i think is also correct (they had the wrong symbology early on and has replaced it with the correct ones. Thats how i understand it atleast please correct me if im wrong. Edited April 4, 2016 by mattebubben
BaconSarnie Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Tirer- shoot From Middle French tirer (“to draw, draw a sword”), from Old French tirer (“to draw, pull out with great effort, snatch violently, tear away”) And lo, Reverend Vegas did say "Take forth unto the infidel the mighty GAU 8 and expend its holy 30MM so that freedom will be brung upon them who knoweth not the joys of BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT" "Amen"
Crunchy Posted April 4, 2016 Author Posted April 4, 2016 (edited) Take a look at the pic I just uploaded please. This shows I'm using the 53OD missile. Now take a look at the HUD and please tell me if this is correct? Before I would see the lock as a small circle in the small square. This looks more like when I use Magic Missile, but like I say I haven't played much lately. BTW: This is with radar ON which I locked the aircraft with first. I then thought you had to lock the aircraft again with the 53OD, by placing a large circle over the square? Edited April 4, 2016 by Crunchy
BaconSarnie Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Thats how its looked for a while, that is quite correct. And lo, Reverend Vegas did say "Take forth unto the infidel the mighty GAU 8 and expend its holy 30MM so that freedom will be brung upon them who knoweth not the joys of BBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTT" "Amen"
Crunchy Posted April 4, 2016 Author Posted April 4, 2016 Thats how its looked for a while, that is quite correct. Does the missile auto lock when in range now because I found I never had to press lock a second time? Also, does it act similar to the magic missile then when using radar? Thanks

Also, does it act similar to the magic missile then when using radar? Thanks You do have to lock the enemy twice before launching or the missile wont track (needs to be in STT / PIC mode to guide the missile) And what do you mean if it acts similar to the Magic missile? You dont have to Boresight it like you have to do with the magic II atm (untill it gets the abillity to slave the seeker to the radar) So if you are within range and have a radar lock you can fire the missile. You dont need the enemy to be exactly infront of you (or the square to be within the circles)
Dave317 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I've found the 530 will also track the small square on the hud and not the actual aircraft that is locked. I assumed the small square is the direction the locked aircraft is heading.
Azrayen Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Yeah. Lots (modern) air-to-air missiles do exactly that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_navigation Some add a loft maneuver to that.

You dont need the enemy to be exactly infront of you (or the square to be within the circles) Do you mean lock it once on the Radar and then on the HUD when it gets close enough? Or do you mean Lock it two times in the Radar? I'll check again, but I'm sure I locked it once in the Radar and then it just automatically locked in the HUD once the target got close enough.
Azrayen Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 There is no "in the radar" nor "in the HUD" lock. There is TWS (=PID) and STT (=PIC). STT (PIC) is needed to fire & guide a S-530D. First lock should give you PID (and it's written on the radar display). Then second lock should give you PIC (and same remark). I think the radar can switch automatically from PID to PIC (FC3 radars do) on certain conditions but I'm not sure it's implemented right now. Didn't test that actually.
IvanK Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 "I think the radar can switch automatically from PID to PIC (FC3 radars do) on certain conditions but I'm not sure it's implemented right now. Didn't test that actually." Its an assumption but I would presume that if a Super R530D launch is tried from PID(TWS) the radar should attempt to go PIC(STT) automatically before launch. This is how the FA18A was with if an AIM7M launch was attempted on the TWS L&S target.
