DPS Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Shooting down cruise missiles, such as the Kh-65, in game is fairly easy using homing missiles – but has anyone managed it with cannon fire? The missile’s small profile doesn’t help either. Here’s a very short video of me not getting a result: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6168471117759360292 And here's the quality version on my web site: http://www.dpsflight.com/CruiseMissiles_0001.wmv
hitman Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Kinda slow on the stream...any chance you can find a new host? AND...too bad you cant nudge the missiles with your wings. They did that during the war. DPS Posted August 16, 2006 Author Posted August 16, 2006 I'll send a copy up to Google Video, although you won't be able to make out much with their resolution.

Trident Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I've done it in Flanker2.51, without a radar lock at that (didn't work in Flanker2.x). Haven't tried in LOMAC.
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Did it once about 18 months ago. Wrote a v1.02 Su-33 mission where I had to kill some Kh-55's before they blew up the Admiral K otherwise I had nowhere to land. Ran out of R-27's and R-73's, so gave the cannon a go. A bit easier over water as they stay at the same height. Tried, but could never do it again..... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
nscode Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I had one where a B52 sends all it's tomahawks on two targets and you try to destroy as many as you can :D when u'r missiles are gone there's nothing else to do but go to guns. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Kuky Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I remember destroying cruise missiles in a night mission with missiles and a cannon (I think it might have been some campaign mission). It's hard but it can be done PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
AerialHawk Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Don't know about cruise missiles, but I've done it to SAMs. You think they hit you when they blow up right in front of you
Force_Feedback Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Don't know about cruise missiles, but I've done it to SAMs. You think they hit you when they blow up right in front of you  That's why the su-25 has R-60s :) If I see a missile coming towards me, I pop a few flares, and if it's a Strela, I launch an R-60. Usually they blow up like 500m away, and if the R-60 misses, I'm screwed. BTW, why is the Strela-1 optical seeker not moddled? Strela 1 should be immune to flares and chaff, unless they have the shape of a su-25. Strale 10 has a combined seeker, so its flare resistace should be higher as well, when fired against a clear sky. The R-27EM is not that handy, yes it can launch earlier, BUT, its seeker should be able to work better than that of the R-27ER at low alt. (min. seeker alt is 3m) Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

dynamocl Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 More practise with the guns I think DPS, a straight and level target should be easy. Also, that wing tipping scene at the end didnt go quite to plan. Would also be daft to try wing tipping current long distant missiles due to their internal navigation methods. The reason it worked in WW2 is that the V missiles had no navigation, they were aimed at takeoff and that was it.
LaRata Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Hello : I try some time ago to shot down missiles :) I will try againg in FC 1.12a
DPS Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 Nice shots, LaRata. Uebung macht den Meister as I think they say. I noticed that the Kh-65 flies at a constant IAS all the way to the target, I would guess that that is fairly prototypical for a jet. The V-1 in IL2 behaves more like a rocket; accelerating all they way as it burns fuel and gets lighter
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 The reason it worked in WW2 is that the V missiles had no navigation, they were aimed at takeoff and that was itIts flight was controlled by a simple gyro system to keep it straight and level and the duration (range) controlled by a timer controlling the cutting of the elevator controls to force a steep dive. This usually caused the engine to cut out due to fuel starvation.
