Hi, i recently bought a nice gaming pc with an SSD drive.

The guy I got it from said not to install anything on that drive.

I was all excited to finally fly this sim and installed 1.5 on it like an idiot.

I really suck at computer stuff, can I just cut and paste it out of my C (sys ops) drive and into the D (storage, witch is where i installed 2.0) or is there some special procedure i need to do?

Hi Dallas48,

Congrats on getting a nice machine, I know the feeling of not wanting to wait! :pilotfly:

As for your question, the easiest method without a doubt, is for you to deactivate your 1.5 modules, uninstall from C drive, reboot and re-install to the D drive.

If you wanted to copy and paste it over, it won't work without editing the registry to update your file paths etc. (assuming you're using DCS World directly and not steam)

Now I've mentioned de-activating the modules first, you may not need to do this with a simple re-install provided there are no hardware changes, but I can't be sure as you're installing to a different drive. Hopefully someone else will confirm this.

Lets first find out how big the SSD drive is. You need around 40GB free for DCS (on the safe side).

I would not recommend copying your installation, though it might be possible.

What I would do is:

- Make a backup of your config folder. It is located at: C:/Users/*your account name*/saved games/DCS. It is always a good idea to have a backup of this folder when you want to reinstall.

- Deactivate all your bought modules. You can do this by going to the directory where you installed DCS. Drive(C or D, etc):/*the map you installed it in*/Eagle Dynamics/DCS World/Mods/aircraft (or campaigns if you have bought them)/*the aircraft or campaign*/bin/***_protect. Run the program and choose to deactivate the module.

- Deinstall all of DCS

- Reinstall DCS on your preferred drive

- Install and activate all of your modules by logging in ingame and going to the module manager.

- Put your config folder back where it belongs

Provided there is enough empty space on your C drive, leave it be, it will perform much better there. But you do not want to keep adding additional programs/files to that drive.

Go to your C drive with a RIGHT CLICK und clean the drive out, including System files.

Each Win10 build you install swallows 14-15GB...and there havbe been a few updates already.

Might well be that u can free up 15-50GB this way if it has never been done before.

RightClick "C" or whereever your system remains on ( usually C ) and choose PROPERTIES

There click DISK CLEAN UP and then click CLEAN UP SYSTEM FILES....then check all boxes in the pop up, click ok and REBOOT after it's finished ;)

do this after each and every new build once you know you dont want to revert to it anymore.

Thank You All for taking the time to help me with this,Verry much appreciated!

I can see i didnt give all the info I should have.

Win 7 pro/ Intel Core i7-3930k CPU @3.20GHz/ 16.0 GB Ram/ 64-Bit OS/

GeForce GTX 960/

C drive is the SSD were i put the sim, 80.6 GB free of 223

D drive is storage where i put 2.0 Open Alpha, 719 free of 881GB

Would I be better off buying another SSD to install and run 1.5 and 2.0

and leaving my C drive to run windows and watever?

Thank You All again for youre help and suggestions. (as you can tell what i know about computers wouldnt fill a thimble)

If you wanted the ultimate performance, yes. Having said that, running DCS on an SSD wouldn't necessarily make the game run better, it would improve your loading times, and maybe if you're flying in Nevada it would help eliminate any stutters but your specs are good enough to run DCS pretty well anyway.

In short, if you have the money to burn, go for it :music_whistling:

SSDs are getting cheaper so save up for a few months and add another then put DCS on it.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

That's not correct, you don't have do deactivate DCS. You can uninstall the game and reinstall in a different place without deaktivating it.

80.6 GB is plenty free for DCS, go ahead and put in on C drive, dont worry

Still, follow my advice above and check if u can free one or the other older Win10build on your drive, it's easy to do !

Ok,now that I understand how it works, I think Ill leave it how it is for now

and get another SSD to install all my DCS stuff onto it.

( and get a tatoo on my forehead reminding me not to install stuff on my C drive..)

Again a Big Thank you to Youall for taking the time to get me squared away on this!!

Really cool community here, its a nice change from getting called a dumbass, RTFM responces Ive gotten on other sim forums. :)

Welcome dallas48 ;)

I eventually put in a 2nd SSD as well as you can see in my sig, it only holds GAMES.... had the same issue...256GB wont hold it all and going back to HDD is a no-go after 3 years on SSD now. HDD is a good backup and storage but all the other stuff is so much more responsive on SSD.
