Skywarp Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Hello, I'm currently doing the Georgian Hammer campaign and have gotten pretty good at avoiding ground fire and missiles, but I have gotten shot down a couple of times by Su-25's, and now I'm starting to see Mig 29's pop up on the RWR. I've learned that when AWACS gives a "hot" call it usually means an airborne threat is bearing down on me. I've reviewed training materials for the AIM 9 system, the air to air hud, and the air to air TGP, to make sure I'm competent in employing the system. That's all good an well, but those airplanes are too darn small to find! So I was wondering if anyone had any tips to share about finding targets, or stories to tell about experiences they have had with air to air success. I'm all ears!
Zabuzard Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Make sure to call in SEAD & CAP as soon as possible. As soon as I did that there was no enemy AC close to me anymore in this campaign. Frequently request picture from AWACS and work with his bullseye coordinates. You then should know where the enemy fighters are and if they are currently a threat for you. I can remember there was a mission where I needed very long and then some Migs arrived. I noticed them on the RWR and observed there flight path using AWACS. As soon as they reached the area I leaved. I had no visual on them, only AWACS bullseye coordinates, worked like a charm. Good tip: Check your six frequently, before every attack, after every minute etc. You won't visually spot targets if you do not exactly know where they are. They key is situational awareness, which is very difficult to acquire. Study the mission, use AWACS, know your position to bullseye, know where friendlies are (TAD), check your six. Then you'll probably know when it gets dangerous. Technically you may try using the Model enlargement option (options menu), makes far objects bigger. Thus easier to see. Good luck, have fun :)
Xavven Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 You should be avoiding air to air fights as best you can. A Mig-29 can shoot you down from beyond visual range -- you won't see it coming.
StandingCow Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Agreed with the others, the hog is not a good A2A fighter at all... often times the enemy will see you way before you see them. Call in your CAP and SEAD asap. 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo
Skywarp Posted May 7, 2016 Author Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Thank you for the replies! I had figured out that requesting bogey dope fairly often is a good idea just to check for hot calls. Calling in the CAP and SEAD was the missing piece of the puzzle for me. Oh, and just to double check, 'merged' means enemy aircraft is right on top of me, correct? Edited May 7, 2016 by Skywarp
Remarkymarkable Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I'm new. Can someone tell me what SEAD and CAP are and where I can learn about them? Thank you.
Basher54321 Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Some basics on here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suppression_of_Enemy_Air_Defenses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_air_patrol Edited May 7, 2016 by Basher54321
Zabuzard Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 In the Georgian Hammer campaign, the mission designer added the option to activate some friendly groups of CAS, CAP and SEAD as assistance.
