Damocles Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Some modules are better than others, VR wise, not intentional obviously, it's just that VR obviously shines a light on deficencies that weren't apparent before. Some modules, while they look good using a traditional monitor setup really don't quite come up to scratch when used in VR. It's certainly not a criticism, just an unplanned for perspective. Some modules don't work so well because areas not normally seen can now be observed and others, usually the more complex cockpits, mix 3D parts with 2D parts detracting from otherwise good pits. These are simply my observations and in no way do I consider them definitive, as I fly around more I may very well begin to appreciate different aspects or that my initial thoughts were incorrect, so please just accept them as such and please add your thoughts on the modules that you've tried. So far of the modules I've tried my favorites, would be: The 109k , Good, well rendered pit, wings look solid and made from what they are when reflecting light and if you stand up in the cockpit the aircraft appears complete. If there is one small niggle about the 109 it is, when you stand the external surfaces don't have the same metallic look as the wings. Bravo to whoever made the 109, 8 out of 10. The Mig 15, Again very well rendered pit and the aircraft looks complete when standing in cockpit. The only area that I think lets it down is the external surfaces, visible from the cockpit, they don't reflect light as well as on the 109 making them appear less realistic. Still, an excellent VR ride, 7 out of 10 F86, Much the same as the MIG 15 above so again 7 out of 10. It will be interesting, as I go through the WW2 aircraft, to see if, because the pits are less complex, they by and large make for a better, more complete, VR experience. I hope, whoever is modeling the Spitfire, spends any extra time he might have giving the aircraft a VR polish. A very fitting aircraft to usher in a new Flight sim era. Edited May 7, 2016 by Damocles
Damocles Posted May 8, 2016 Author Posted May 8, 2016 All of the FC3 aircraft seem to be universally good, even better, I think, than the stand alone A-10C. If there is one area of improvement, it would be giving the dials a glassy look. The 3D effect of them is usually very good, but never the less they look slightly odd without the glass. Another minor detail are the rudder pedal foot plates on the F15 which don't match the quality of the rest of the cockpit. I'm going to put them at 7.5 out of 10 for the FC3 aircraft. I have to say I was surprised at how good they are, given that they aren't single aircraft specific. The cockpits really are beautiful, I could just sit there for ages looking at the various switches and dials. It rally demonstrates the amount of work that goes into these projects. The Rift and therefore I assume the Vive really don't do the cockpits justice at the moment, because of the limited resolution, but when the second generation VR headsets come along they really will be superb, pretty much works of art. I just hope that the developers will prepare for that day and give the cockpits that final VR ready polish they deserve.
Mt5_Roie Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Aircraft have gotten better. I find that ones without bodies for the pilot tend to be scarier. The HUDs on the FC3 aircraft have gotten better. The gun sites on the WW2 is still hard to look at with both eyes. Here's a video I did recently: Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
SkateZilla Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) All of the Cockpits were built prior to VR becoming Mainstream, So there's that. So : -"3D / Structural Wise" (ie some parts being Modeled in 3d while others are bump mapped textures.,) I doubt they get changed, MiG-29 being the last of the FC3 Cockpits to be replaced w/ new 6DoF Model. I wouldnt be surprised if some of them get tweaked a bit to where they are a bit better in VR (ie Sights, etc). As for External vs Cockpit Metalic Surfaces, I think that's because the cockpits don't use Specular Layers in the Texture Materials Edited May 9, 2016 by SkateZilla Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
