Hello,

Just a heads up. Navy AOC here, started my career on the F-14B+ UPGRADE, moved on to the F/A-18F, then the SH-60B, then the SH-60F and HH-60H, and now work with the MH-60R, MH-60S, AH-1W, AH-1Y, and AH-1Z.

Anyhow if you have any ordnance questions or even general maint questions provided its unclass Ill be happy to help.

Very nice

Is the F-14B/D able to supercruise at mach 1.2?

Mission: "To intercept and destroy aircraft and airborne missiles in all weather conditions in order to establish and maintain air superiority in a designated area. To deliver air-to-ground ordnance on time in any weather condition. And to provide tactical reconaissance imagery" - F-14 Tomcat Roll Call

I have heard of the RAG super cruising em (slick no rails, etc). With the F110s. But dont recall it happening in the fleet due to the drop tanks, weapons rails (phoenix rails fixed up with BRU32s) and the LANTIRN pod on 8B.

From the stories I've heared the F-14 was a maintenance handfull. From your experience, what were the biggest issues with the jet? And do you have any remarkable stories you can tell us?

And seeing as the Iranian F-14 are going into their 4th decade of service with the IRIAF, including complete neglect during the first years after the revolution, not to mention almost a decade of intense war in a sandy environment; any ideas how they've been able to operate them without US support?

I really hope Leatherneck will simulate the circuit breakers!:joystick:

Some people say that China and Russia help in the Iran F-14's maintenance.

Their F-14's employ the Russians missiles. And the AWG 9 was replaced by another radar.

It was a maintenance handful but it was also very very forgiving. The biggest issue was always the AICS system. The second thing that sucked was the Armament panel on the left hand side for the RIO whoever the Navy hired to uork on it either didnt use wiring diagrams or they thought it was a joke. The Electronic fuzing system was impeccable it was the AWW4 system out of the A-6 (very reliable reliable - a2g system)

As for the Iranian F14s. Ive read in several places, theyve upgraded them, and while they may have been grounded intermittently, theyve found parts. Im gunna look it up where theres an interview with an Iranian kitty pilot and basically what I recall theyve been able to replace parts with off the shelf ( best buy?) Components and for awhile aircraft scavengers at ARAMARC till they destroyed all parts including museum shape parts (internal component's). Operating in sand is easy. As long as they do post flight engine washes with something like BnB... they wont lose engine power quickly.

I have some anecdotes from IFR probes to folks crawling into the turkey feathers to take a nap only to be awakened to some severe heat. Was and still is a great jet. Darkbrother - Most of your communist bloc IR missiles are western knock offs.

Most short range IR missiles you find overseas and let me preface this - air to air. Use technology stolen from Raytheon. Almost all music seeker are all aspect from the M and beyond. The aircraft was the limiting factor. (No look and shoot cuing from the helmet)

Wow! I didn't know that. Thanks for the information!

Nice info here, thank you. :)

One question though:

It was a maintenance handful but it was also very very forgiving.

How so? Meaning that systems broke often, but you could usually get things working (at least partially, etc)? Would love to know more about this.

Very forgiving as in once you got it flying it didnt like to stop. Had its issues needed maintenance but even up until its retirement it would fly 6 to 9 hour sorties.

AIM-7F Rmax at 20kft, head to head, Mach 1.8 closure. What's the Pk at this Rmax? How are you defining Pk?

LOL Us maintenance types don't have the information of performance specs- just descriptions in a manual. That type of info needs a pilot or an engineer with complete access to the actual specs. We just fix what the kids break while they're burning holes in the sky.

How was it transitioning to helicopters? Is flying helicopters enjoyable? I'd imagine doing stuff like ASW is pretty boring.

Probad,

Sure ill look it over .... looks like a lot of messages there so it'll probably take me a few to read through, but I'll add what I can. Loaded the weapon hundreds of times but only saw six shot while I was in 'cats.

Can you provide any data on this?

The "claim" by Iran rolls right with their propaganda. They wanted to see if their F-14s could take some Russian equipment, primarily the engines. This never worked and didn't happen. There are pictures of an Iranian F-14 carrying an R-27, nothing about it shooting or engaging a target. The radar upgrade is not a replaced AWG-9. This upgrade was announced the same time the US Navy upgraded the old F-16A/Bs radar with something that reportedly extended the detection range by 15%. This is a blanket statement and may have just been a software upgrade or some easy, low-cost on the line hardware change. At the same time- the Iranians stated they had extended the radar range of the F-5 and F-14A by 15%. It has to be related.
