Hello all, I have a few more questions, just trying to learn.

1) What tactics can you use when flying head on in a Su-27 for example, against an F-14 (with those super long range missiles). I have viewed ironhands videos, and I can make those tactics work with most cases of being out-ranged by enemy's missiles, but those whatever-54 that the F-14 carry have to great a reach! I mean I can evade, 1 maybe 2, but I see that thing carries 4, and it always nails me with one of those, and if I'm lucky enough to evade all those first ones, he'll get me with another.

2) What is that white pod looking thing that I see often on the F-16C hanging on its center? Some kind of targeting device?

3) As far as I can tell, there are no fire and forget AA missiles for either the flanker or the fulcrum. So theoredically speaking, if I loose lock after I launched a missile at an enemy, the missile will fail, right? I think I have had occassions when I fire an R-77, and loose lock, but the R-77 still hit its target. Should this be?

I tried using the search in the forum to find answers to my question, but the search function isn't working for me at all, nothing comes up.

That's all for now, thank you for reading and helping out.

You need more practice ... I won't elaborate further.

Ironically, you will soon find the 54's easy to dodge (they shouldn't be)

That is the ECM pod. The F-16 does not have built-in ECM.

The R-77 is a fire and forget missile ... sort of. Consider fire and forget at long range 'almost fire and forget'. You have to guide them to within say 15km of the target so they have a better chance of hitting.

Goya and GG covered #'s 2 and 3, but in regards to #1, the best tactic would be to F-Pole, in which you maximize the distance between you and the enemy, flying at just the boundary of losing lock.

You turn into the enemy, fire a missle, and pull back out keeping the distance between you as great as possible without losing lock. By the time the AIM54 Reaches you, it'll have lost most of it's energy and a simple pull into the missle will cause it to overshoot.

Yep, they are very, very easy missiles to defeat. First of all, the AI doesn't use TWS, which already would make the Aim-54C a lot more deadlier than what it is now by reducing the warning time from approximately 30 seconds to only few seconds. The missile also apparently has much higher loft profile that we have now presented in lockon, which would create even more problems for aircraft RWR systems to pick up the missile when it goes active. And last, but not least, the lomac Phoneix just cannot hit any targets that are pulling some G's..

1. You should only have to make two evasions against an F14 before he goes defensive and the first Aim54 is the most difficult to get through. ECM jamming makes this much easier but with out ecm the power of the tomcats radar can fog your RWS, making it difficult to predict the proximity of the missile. Your aim is to get with in firing range and once you defeat the first missile then you should be close to your Rmax range so as soon as you can, fire and maintain lock. Now the second evasion can be done by looking out of the cockpit at the missile itself, the Aim54 has a huge motor so you will most likely see the smoke trail coming at you. I personally choose visuals to evade the second one basically because its more fun that way and gives you much better SA on the bandit.

3. As has already been said fire and forget is really fire, hold lock until the small radar on the missile can lock onto the target and at that point you can forget. Heat seeking (IR) missiles on the other hand are true fire and forget, as soon as they leave the rails you can select another target and fire, so make sure you always carry a couple of R-27ET’s (ET’s for an IR missile have quite a long range).

Goon "Yep, they are very, very easy missiles to defeat."

I know :-) what I thought he meant by:

"Ironically, you will soon find the 54's easy to dodge (they shouldn't be)"

was that as a LOBS tester he was letting slip that in LOBS they would be even easier to dodge.

That was what the question marks were about.

Cheers.

Ah, no, Weta. I meant with a little exprience he'll find they're child's play.
