ROGO Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 One other thing do you guys think 16 gb ram, r9 390 8gb, i5 4690k @ 3.8 ghz is good enough to run vr at decent settings? Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Chivas Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I have no allegiance to Vive or Rift. I just wanted the best VR experience. While I would agree that Vive's feature as implemented by DCS is mostly on par, I don't think it would fix visual clarity. So when you sit still and look at the cockpit, with nothing else going on (so no Async Time Warp or ASW kicking in), Rift was clearer for me. Was it SIGNIFICANT? No it, wasn't. But I could tell the difference. So if room scale using laser and the amazing hand controller tracking that comes with Vive is important to you, get it. I don't remember if the slimmer cable to the HMD is standard or not, but make sure it is. Because the original three-cable cable for the HMD on Vive was quite annoying. One other thing, I like the built-in headphones that come with Rift. It supports 3D sound as well for software to take advantage of it. It's quite convenient to use the built in headphones. I think with Vive, you need to get the Deluxe headmount to take advantage of it. Your right, the Vive can't fully match the Rifts visual clarity simply because the Rift display has smaller gaps between pixels, but thats at the cost of FOV at these relatively low resolution headsets. The Vive does has a slightly larger FOV, but at this point clarity is more important that FOV especially in flight sims at least until resolutions are significantly improved.

The Vive does has a slightly larger FOV, but at this point clarity is more important that FOV especially in flight sims at least until resolutions are significantly improved. Another thing is that image clarity and FOV are both closely related and image quality may be better on the rift but at the expense of FOV. Remember though if better image quality and a smaller FOV is what you want people seem to forget or not realize that you can easily adjust the Vive's lenses and give it both a smaller FOV and also make the image quality clearer. I personally don't like to do that though except when using vorpx and it's really needed, because in DCS it is rather immersion breaking and gives one tunnel vision. 1 ------------ 3080Ti, i5- 13600k 32GB VIVE index, VKB peddals, HOTAS VPC MONGOOSE, WARTHOG throttle, BKicker,
Wolf8312 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 First, I'll be upfront, I'm very much partial to the HTC Vive implementation of virtual reality, such as TribalInstincts is, in that our views are about the same on the whole issue. With the vast improvements in SteamVR and DCS World in virtual reality, plus being able to run DCS World at a MSAA 8, and pixel density of 1.6+, and still being able to get mostly a 90fps result, it's about the best visuals your going to get out of a 1K per eye headset (which is both the Rift and Vive). So, the real issue for us DCS World enlistees and officers is, who's gonna bust out a 4K headset first, and be the real champion of the headset wars? I'm still wishing for a Christmas 2017 surprise from one of the two. :) With that said, if your on a tight budget, and your absolutely sure your never, ever, ever gonna use room scale, then the rift is likely a good choice. But, if you can afford the extra couple hundred of dollars, or your boss can (even better), then I'd indefinitely recommend the HTC Vive, even if the vast majority of it's use is going to be in our, at least my, all time favorite application, the World of DCS. We've been playing with some fairly amazing concepts you can do with "room scale" (and I'm talking like, roooom scale) in the World of DCS which do not require extensive modifications of the DCS World application, which in the coming months I'll be posting videos of in my Youtube channel, that is of course, as my free time, or the lack thereof permits. Just takes a little imagination, a lot of free time, and lots of room...:) So, that's my fairly opinionated opinion :D:D:smartass:. I just bumped it up to 1.6 and 8X MSSA and as you say it looks so much better and performace seemed great! Would probably have more issues on some more demanding DCS missions, but as I plan to use the mission editor for VR from here on out who cares! ------------ 3080Ti, i5- 13600k 32GB VIVE index, VKB peddals, HOTAS VPC MONGOOSE, WARTHOG throttle, BKicker,
feiercrack Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 (edited) Any News? Hello all, now i am very interested in buying an Vive. THe price drops over here in germany to almost 700.- Euro. How are the improvements now of the current software status, drivers, etc vive vs rift? is the vive now much better, or even with rift since last march? i like to play Onward (Steam) Arma 3, Falcon BMS also with a HMD. And how do you guys flying? With HOTAS? I have the TM Cougar HOTAS, Cougar MFD´s, and an Simped F16/C Rudders Is it nessecary to use those VR Controllers as well? Thanks, cheers Edited September 25, 2017 by feiercrack DCS: Black Shark 1 orig. some1 Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Falcon BMS does not support VR at all. VR controllers are not supported in the simulators. You play as usual, HOTAS, keyboard and mouse. It's doable with some practice, some people use voice activation software. Hardware: VPForce Rhino, FSSB R3 Ultra, Virpil WarBRD, Hotas Warthog, Winwing F15EX, Slaw Rudder, GVL224 Trio Throttle, Thrustmaster MFDs, Saitek Trim wheel, Trackir 5, Quest Pro
mrwell Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 And Arma3 neither is VR friendly. I managed to have a huge screen in 3D with it with the Vive (mouse and keyboard) but not good enough to play. In the other hand, Onward is amazing, with Touch controllers. Flying with DCS and Elite Dangerous is amazing (with HOTAS, rudder...) For the Rift vs Vive comparison, there are hundreds of threads to read about but summarizing, if you are gonna be seated: Rift, if you want to move around: Vive. The other details are "feelings", IMHO. Cheers
BeastyBaiter Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Vive advantages: 1) Marginally better room scale tracking 2) Additional available peripherals (such as rifle shaped controllers) Rift advantages: 1) Slightly less screen door effect 2) Better touch controllers (for now) 3) $100 cheaper (in USA) Overall they are very comparable. I have the Rift and am pleased with it. For DCS and BoS, a good HOTAS such as the X-52/55/56 is a must. You really can't be messing with keyboard shortcuts in flight. A few things like landing gear are doable since "G" is right next to a key with a bump, but anything harder to find is going to be a problem. I don't find using a mouse a problem though, that's easy enough to find and click on stuff. Actually, it's easier than with TIR due to greater head tracking stability (it's 1 to 1 and never freaks out). System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.
