In the left down corner of the HUD with a missile selected you normally can see "XXX" (that stand for the type of missile and quantity) followed by an additional letter "M" (that can be changed for a "L", "S" or nothing with my joystick rotary axis "base/distance").

 

I guess stands for "Short" (or "Small"), "Medium" and "Long" (or "Large"). May be in relation to target size.

 

If you have more than one tgt in TWS, you will have 2 letters.

 

I didn´t find any world in the oficial manual in relation with that.

 

Does anyone real know (no "guessing") the actual funcion of this option for air to air missiles?

unfortunatly I can provide only guesses.

 

 

 

In the real world. The AIM-120 AMRAAM has, just like the AN/APG 63 radar and many other combat radars, several Pulse Repetition Frequency modes. HPRF and MPRF. The missile will typically start active in HPRF and after a certain amount of distance has been closed to the target continue in MPRF. It's possible this axis allows the pilot to modulate this distance.

 

Note that the real callout for an AMRAAM entering HPRF is 'Husky' and for an AMRAAM entering the MPRF state is 'pitbull'. But since these are later developments of the AMRAAM I'm not sure to what extend they are used by actual air forces around the world.

 

that still wouldn't explain why it's possible to see this with other weapons as well. The screenshot I provided is with a Sidewinder in radar slaved mode. Perhaps it adjusts the PRF or something else while in STT as well. It's simply possible that isn't fully implemented.

 

By scrolling the axis all the way you make the marker go away. I would guess that this would be choosing unknown. Choosing S(mall), M(edium) or L(arge) would apply to the Radar Cross Section of the target.

 

I'm sorry for posting a guess. It is based on my knowledge and understanding of how an F-16 works.

I hope someone else can pitch in and say if I am correct or wrong. If it turns out I am right, does someone else know if this is fully implemented in the FC3 F15?

It is indeed target size....Doesn't do anything to husky/pitbull range tho, AFAIK.

 

On the F-15 or on any plane? From what I understand about the F-16, choosing Small over Medium reduces the MPRF distance by about 33%.

Could be used to distinguish between target types, bomber vs fighter etc, similarly to how the Russian radars show target size directly on the radar scopes.

 

If a similar analogy is followed, then:

Small = missile (antiship, SEAD, etc.. air to air missiles obviously don't show), drone (Predator)

Medium = fighter

Large = bomber / passenger plane / cargo plane / AWACS / air refueler

In DCS, I don't think target size does anything to the missiles.

 

Its not like it would matter anyway, because any shot outside 8 miles will probably go the way of the AIM-7D! :P

Bombers and transports are large.

 

Fighters are medium.

 

Small is *probably* missiles and helicopters, I haven't tested that yet.

 

I don't think this affects fuze settings in-game, maybe it would in the real jet, I don't know.
