TBear Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 Isnt spotting much harder in an F-5 vs Mig 21 enviroment? Both online and oflline (with my settings on max scaling) I noticed that spotting those 2 planes is much harder than spotting a Sabre a Mig-15 or a Mustang for example.. Anybody else noticed it or is just my impression? Mission designer with...drumroll.... Flamin_Squirrel Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 I'm guessing it's not down to their size (Mig21 and F-5 are not much bigger), it's because they're faster. You'll find yourself further away from your target than with slower planes.
Thisdale Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 i'm in VR (Rift). Spotting the F5 in flight at more than 5nm is near impossible. If you check out the F-14 Topgun pilot video at around 19:20 he says "The F-5s.. you couldn't see 'em outside of about 5 miles". [ame] [/ame]
mattebubben Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 For me when it comes to spotting i usually have a hard time spotting targets and medium ranges then i do at long ranges (with the Model Enlargement option enabled) Because it does not help as much at medium ranges (especially not if you try to zoom in to find something) so the targets become almost invisible even tough you could sea them further away by using the large models =P. I wish they would try to revise the LOD system to try to aid more in spotting atleast until targets get close enough. Since the enlargened models option is imperect since it only helps on some ranges (if you dont zoom in) and it does not always look that good, Id rather they just use a black Dot approach for targets at long range (until they got close enough to where you should be able to see the shape etc.

The F-5 must be a real PITA to see in the real world.:D

The F-5 is bigger then the P-51 and can not do a disappearing act more then the mustang. At exactly 17:30 he says "fighting against F-5s that at 5 miles nose on are very difficult to see" NOSE ON big difference! TBear Posted July 26, 2016 Author Posted July 26, 2016 Well..Im used to fly in ACG Servers. In the options list i noticed that the WWII server has "impostors" value set to large , but the F-5 VS MIg21 is set to medium...i think this is the difference in spotting..isnt it? BTW i preferr the large one. I know is a controversal topic, but from my experience, in a clear day with no haze i was used to spot planes from about 10 miles and recognize something like an F-15 or Mirage from much more than 3 miles...Actually in DCS with Model Enlargment less that large i feel like a myopic guy without glasses ;) Maybe in DCS, scaling is not perfect yet, with some strange perspective behaviour, but at least with high settings U can have more realistic WVR situational awareness. The F-5 is longer, but the P-51 has a wider wingspan so visibility is going to depend on aspect. The higher speeds involved in jet combat mean you can end up some way apart in 2 circle fight.
