dburne Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Well dang, It was not that long ago that my Warthog throttle died on me, and I replaced it with a new one. Now I have had this Warthog for some time having got it shortly after release. Well today my paddle switch seems to have gone kaput on the joystick. Augh!. It for the most part stays on, when pressing the button continuously it will occasionally turn off but them almost immediately back to the constant on state. Tried restarting the pc and unplugging and plugging back in the stick, looks like a defective switch. I use the paddle as modifier button. Of all the luck, I did not need this at this time! FeistyLemur Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 (edited) Actually never-mind what I said, I might have been thinking of something else. I don't know if that adjuster on the bottom can press the button, don't have the stick in front of me. I think thrustmaster sells replacement buttons. Kind of a pain though. Sokol1_br Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 The switch under the cap looks very ordinary.: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e27/hrvhegeykc/IMG_20150109_220853_zps5dd57673.jpg~original Ignore Tm spare parts and replace with 12x12mm Omron switches - the ones used by CH/VKB. http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/omron-electronics-inc-emc-div/B3F-4055/SW414-ND/31799 Related topic: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=137291
dburne Posted September 1, 2016 Author Posted September 1, 2016 Thanks for the tip Sokol1, certainly worth looking into. I wonder how difficult it might be to replace? I am handicapped now and do not have all my vision... FeistyLemur Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 According to that thread the paddle button seems to use a membrane switch and fit in a housing. But those are really cheap on ebay and linked there. Removing that tiny snap ring on the paddle arm to get the casing apart could be challenging with limited vision. Other than that the button is just two wires which presumably need to be soldered. Maybe there's someone local who can help, or someone from here that lives relatively close who could repair it if you sent it and the parts to them.
dburne Posted September 1, 2016 Author Posted September 1, 2016 Thanks FeistyLemur! Well an update, so I took a pen and pushed in on the button itself and let it pop back out, and it started working again for a few moments, then stayed on again. So did it again, and also sprayed compressed air around it. It seems to be a little better, but I can tell it is still going to be somewhat iffy. I am wondering if maybe some dust buildup has gotten in there and preventing that button from springing all the way out... going to keep messing with it some. dburne Posted September 1, 2016 Author Posted September 1, 2016 (edited) Well messing with it some more, spraying more compressed air and pushing the button in and letting it "pop" back out , has certainly made it better. It appears it may be workable now, still getting a little flash of a button press occasionally as I let it out slower, if I let it really pop out by releasing the paddle rapidly it appears to be functioning. There may be hope yet... keeping fingers crossed. This joystick has been rock solid for me for many years, never really had any of the gimbal issue or need to apply grease as some others have, still feels like the day I got it. Edit: Oh yeah she is looking more like normal now, may have just had some "sticktion" in that button from dust buildup. I am hoping that was the case, appears to be operating much more like normal now the more I mess with it... dburne Posted September 3, 2016 Author Posted September 3, 2016 Augh apparently that was only a temporary fix, that dang button back to doing it again - very haphazardly making it very difficult as it is my modifier. Apparently the button is just plain going bad on me. May be worth checking into trying to replace the switch, guess I would have nothing to lose by trying that first. FeistyLemur Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Once those membrane style buttons start to get fiddly, usually replacing them is the only option.
dburne Posted September 3, 2016 Author Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) Yeah I think you are right, and am sure it will only progressively get worse. Replacing that switch will likely present a real challenge for me, but worth a shot I guess - lot cheaper than a new stick to replace. What is really strange - I can takr my finger and using my nail press in directly on that switch in and out - repeatedly several times, and it works appropriately every time ( I am viewing the button presses in the joystick controller settings in windows). Each push activates the button, and each release de-activates the button. Every time. But using the paddle, is when things start to get very jittery - it starts flashing as it is released, oftentimes just staying on. And the paddle is not depressing the button at release at all. For some reason, the paddle depressing the switch is causing it to go haywire. That one has me scratching my head. FeistyLemur Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Some guy posted about breaking his stick and flat out buying a new one. Maybe he'll sell you the handle or the whole thing for parts at a reduced price. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=173470

However I still would like to give a try to replace that button once I have my new one in and running, to have as a spare and maybe even to use the grip of it if I decide to get the Gunfighter when it is ever released. Then I would have the Gunfighter with the Warthog grip, and another Warthog stick to use as I desire. Is the button shown in the link above the only thing I would need? Then just pop the old one out, pop the new in and solder a couple of wires? If are looking for PnP solution need a Tm part (and pay shipping from France...) :D
